dumping 1680 recordings to labtop, do i need a good soundcard still?

Im gonna do all my recordings on my VS1680. and then I am going to dump them into my labtop.

On the labtop all I am going to be doing is adding samples from the labtop and applying them to the stuff from the 1680.

Also Ill be using some program like calkwalk to add effects to the already 1680 recorded vocals,

and also some EQing,

So do I still need a good labtop soundcard, what if I just dumped the labtop finished product back into the 1680?

would this cause some quality or volume degration?

any other nkow issues or concerns with doing this???
 
How do you intend to "dump" the tracks into the laptop?
 
im gonna dump it into the laptop by, hhoking up the 1680 to the laptop, and transfering it to the laptop,

then on the laptop im gonna add samples and effects to the vocals and maybe some basic EQing,

then Im gonna burn the finished product on the laptop, to CD with my external CD burner,



my question is, do i need a good soundcard for this???? will this cause noticeble sound degradation? any other issues ui should be concerned about,
 
If you're not actually recording any audio source into the laptop, then no, you don't need a good soundcard in terms of converters, noise floor, etc.

You do, however, need a sound card with SPDIF for digital transfer. Otherwise, if you record analog out from the VS into analog in on the laptop, not only will you be going thru an extra stage of AD conversion, you'll be going thru Roland's less-than-stellar converters, AND into your sound cards analog inputs. And since you're asking about needing to upgrade, I'm guessing those inputs don't sound all that great.

Get 2 75-ohm RCA cables (like the ones used for video) and run that signal thru SPDIF, 2 tracks at a time, one panned all the way left and other panned all the way right (if multitrack -- SPDIF is a stereo standard and your tracks, if completely panned, will stay separate). Or, dump a single stereo pair this way.

So, if you want to transfer digitally via SPDIF but your card doesn't have that, you'll need to upgrade.

Or, if you want to transfer analog out to analog in and your current sound card is crappy, you'll need to upgrade.
 
Also if you are gonna try and dump all of your tracks manually and individually to your laptop...good luck. I tried this once and it was a nightmare trying to get all of the tracks to line up in proper tempo. Just my 10 cents...my 2 cents is free...
