i know this is pretty dumb, but what is a channel insert? I was under the impression that it was a channel out, but i am not sure...

~thanks

It's a channel in/out. Their primary function is to provide a place to "insert" a device like a compressor or outboard EQ but can also be utilized as a spot to grab some signal from an individual channel to use as a direct out. Usually the insert is configured right after the trim controll and before the EQ/Fader section of the channel circuit, so when used as a direct out, the EQ and fader have no affect on the signal that you access at that point, only the trim does.

channel in/out

okay, so do mixers come with outputs on each of their channels in which the output comes after the eq and fader? if so, whats that called?

Most pro mixers will have a direct out and the Insert should be considered the Direct IN.

Mackie and some of the other compact mixers use a single stereo jack for the in and out. You use a TRS to dual mono cable to split the in and out.

Direct outs are usually just pre fader. Some mixers may allow you to switch it to post fader but I dont know who does.

Usually for post fader mixing you use the busses. If that is important for you you would want a 4 or 8 buss mixer. Whatever gives you the amount of seperate busses you need.
