Hi,

Just a quick question. I have a client who wants to transfer some of his stuff on to my system with his old 20-bit DAT recorder.

Was just wondering if this would be compatible with my 24-bit sound card (Delta 1010) ? As far as I know, none of my software offers 20-bit recording options or can save anything in 20-bit format, although some of my software does 32-bit float.

Will this be a problem at all?

Thanks!

Its fine. Just record at 24bit, the last four bits will just be zeros but thats no issue. It will sound the same.

DAT is a 16bit format, there is nothing more on the tape. Better do a digital transfer of the tapes. Use your spdif for that. No setting of levels, no hum, no extra noise. Even then, use 24/32 bits as you will need those later on when editing.

Actually Tascam has a 24-bit DAT - the DA-40HR.......... I beleive it's the only one. All other DATs are 16-bit........
