is it possible to run my guitar into my computers soundcard (where the mic would go in)? i imagine i'd have to get a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter to do this, but would i run the risk of damaging my computer if i did it?

Yes - it is possible, but it'll sound pretty bad.
You shouldn't damage the computer or soundcard.
Just start off with a low volume on the guitar and slowly increase it.

There are many devices out there that will improve the sound and some of them are quite cheap.

Search for threads on amp modelers to get an idea of what's around.
I know very little about this area, but I know options include the Vox Tonelab, Line 6 POD, Line 6 Guitar Port and Sansamp units.

There is also software that does the same job - I've used Amplitube in the past and it's OK for demos.

Another option for higher quality is to mic up the guitar amp and get a cheap recording interface. It sounds as though this is a bit beyond your needs right now.

thanks for the advice. i'm currently reading up and learning about interfaces/software and was wondering what i could in the mean time. i don't wanna go out and plunk down some money til i know enough about what i'm getting into.

Try downloading the Amplitube demo. Then hook up your guitar with a 1/4" to 1/8" plug into your computers input. It worked for me on my iMac, but I didn't really care for the sound shaping tools in Amplitube. Or get a used DI processor and output directly into the computer the same way......... ebay has great deals on older Digitech Genesis 3's, Johnson J-Stations and Pod 2.0's....... Around $100 or less.

Just another idea.

DO NOT PLUG IN THE MIC IN!!! plug in the Line in instead.

is your soundcard a no-latency kind?

if not the sound from any plugin will happen around 1second after you played.

try those, you will see, i never did myself but think it does the job
