Dub voice onto instrumental selection

I'm new to using computers for music applications. I composed a song, notating it on a program called Music Time Deluxe. I saved it as a midi file and can listen to it either on that program or on Windows' Media Player. Now I want to add a vocal line to the instrumental composition. In the old days of recording "sound on sound" with a standard 4-track tape recorder, we used to call this "dubbing." I tried to use my Windows "Sound Recorder" microphone to sing the vocal line while "Media Player" played the corresponding midi file stored on the C-Drive. However, I could not create a new midi file with my voice superimposed on the instrumental composition. What is the simplest way to perform such "dubbing"?
Thanks, Musicbob
