is it possible to have 2 monitors plugged in on a card that has both VGA and DVI or will both screens only show the same thing? or will one of them not work?

Windows XP?....yep, no problem! I could never go back to Single monitor now!!
You can specify 2 main modes...
1)Multimedia Presentation Mode.....(2 identical screens...called 'cloning')
2)Extended Desktop Mode....(What I use.....place your running programs anywhere you like).

Did your video card come with software that will give u these options.
I bought a specialised card (VGA and DVI outputs) which was specifically designed for dual mon mode. (I had to purchase a convertor ($5) for the DVI connection, to bring it back to a standard VGA out).
Also note, that XP can be configured to Dual Display mode even without 3rd party software.
Hope that gets the ball rolling for you!!
Regards,
Superspit.
