Wicked Machine
I’ve been thinking about plug-ins and am aware of systems like Pro Tools that have outboard DSP’s that can run your plug-ins and free up your CPU. I’ve discovered that you can buy stand alone DSP cards that come with a suite of plug-ins and that sounds like a good idea. What I’m trying to figure out is has anyone come up with a DSP card that could run all your plug-ins either DirectX or VST in packages like Sonar or Cubase? I like non-destructive real time use of plug-ins but they use up (especially ones like Waves) an awful lot of CPU in your box. Would it be possible for a company to come up with a DSP card that would run all your plug-ins but use DirectX or VST so they aren’t proprietary?

no such thing except for pro tools TDM..which i think now works with ASIO programs...

This makes me wonder if there woudn't be a market for something like this, I myself would be extremely interested in it.

Isn't that what the Mackie UAD 1 and TC Powercore do?

I haven't used them, but it sounds pretty much like what you're talking about.

Yes and no.

Those systems only work with the plug-ins they provide. I want a system that works with my sequencer plugs and any others I buy. I've been looking at UAD and TC and they look impressive so it's under my consideration.

I see

Yeah..it's be real cool if you could buy an 'empty card' processor and be able to upload 'x' amount of plug ins to them, but be able to delete and change as needed....

that would be sweet....good idea!

how is it a good idea...when its been done already? the concept your talking about is pro tools tdm...

This is sort of what I'm talking about.
http://www.plugzilla.com/

But it's only for VST and it's a rack mount.
I would want a PCI card like the TC Works one and run native DirectX plugs. My understanding is a card like this would have to maybe have a x86 CPU on it because that's what DirectX and VST write to, I'm getting over my head here. :D

I don't think anyone is talking about reinventing the wheel as yes the tech has already been done but not for DirectX as far as I can see. So I think celt is thinking it's a good idea for DirectX, as obviously I do myself. If it can be done and nobody has done it then there might be a good business opportunity. I work with some guys who do DSP design but I'm still wondering if there is somethinmg already out there and not TDM.

how is that plugzilla i coudln't find the price...seems interesting

Target price is $3.5k. And it only has 8 slots for vst's or vsti's. For that kind of cash, you could build 2 pc's and use vst system link or fx teleport and accomplish the same thing and then some.

cot damn... i'm just waiting for the vst version of tdm like the homie up there said...
