So when I was setting up my studio I purposely put the drums on the opposite side of the room from my computer so that the mics wouldn't pick up any fan noise. But now that I'm trying to do some recording with it I can't hit record get over to the drums and get ready in time to do the recording. I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions on how to trigger the recording when I'm ready, and I'm using Ableton 8 btw.

I had the same problem and I bought a PCI card to use another video monitor, and got a free monitor off of Craigslist. There's free CRT's there almost daily, here anyways.

Then I got some Belden extensions: a monitor one for the monitor screen and a USB extention for the extra computer keyboard that I put out there. I have a mouse plugged into the keyboard. The drumset is about 12' from the computer and I recall I had to put two Belden extensions together to reach it. I rigged up a mouse pad that attaches to a cymbal stand next to my floor toms.

From what I've done so far, there doesn't seem to be any problem with putting a couple of USB or monitor extension cables together. I was concerned about that and it seems to be no problem.

Aesthetics could use some polish, but it works well:

why can't you just hit record and walk over to the kit and start playing? if you have a pre-programmed click track, give yourself adequate time before the start.

I've tried that already It works just fine for songs at around 120bpm but even at an all out sprint I can't get there in time for songs at 175bpm.

Thanks for the advice Dintymoore I'll have to look into getting some of that stuff maybe Bestbuy will have extension usb cables.

That's what I was thinkin.

I used to be in a similar situation and I'd just lead in with 6 measures of click track instead of 1 like I do now.
But I use a standalone and found an Alesis remote that plugged straight into my board. So no help to you, I know.

Maybe just longer click leads.

An Alesis remote? I didn't even think that Alesis made boards

i must be missing something. why can't you put 20 seconds of silence before the click starts? or 40 seconds? or more?

That's a lot of silence I'd rather just found a way to trigger the recording from the drums

That's just silly. You can use as long of a leader as you need. Just tack on a bunch of extra measures at the beginning. Then use a mic to add a countdown track so you wont be confused about the count.

it's only a lot of silence until you get your drum tracks finished. then you can slide them over to eliminate the silence. but if you'd rather find something to buy, knock your socks off. :laughings:

The only other problem with that is i use the built in metronome instead of a click track though so instead of having 20 seconds of silence i'd still have the clicks and have no idea where the song is at

uh, how about counting it out on your hi-hats, or with your sticks? :laughings:

forget it. go buy something. serial. :laughings:

Bestbuy: I went in there and asked the chick if they had USB cables and she asked me "for what kind of computer?". :( hello?

Bestbuy had a whole wall of their own Geek Squad USB cables, all the same ones you get on eBay for $3 and they wanted $20 for them. That place deserves to go belly up like Circuit City did.

The best place to get USB cables and extensions where I live is Longs drug store. They have Beldens and the prices are way, way better than Bestbuy.

Forget pressing play and jogging to your drumset. That doesn't work in the real world. It takes you a moment or two to get settled into the drumset and running over there wrecks the vibe.

why in the hell would anyone need to run anywhere? what am i missing here? :laughings: :laughings:

i'd also like to point out to chili who i'm sure is waiting for me to recommend the military, i made no comment regarding the fan noise over the drum set thing. :laughings:

Well, not really run, but it's like when you're having sex and you have to get up and go the bathroom and it takes a few moments when you get back in bed to get back to where you were. :)

You can do it, but when I recorded drums with the kit 10' from the computer, by the 5th take I was ready to kill someone. Plus, from the drumset I can see the record levels and adjust the playback levels on different tracks and the click. It's just more calm and it puts you in the zone better - better for your concentration, that's what I found anyway.
