A friend has his "AKG Drum Recording Set" for sale including a D112 and 4 AKG C418 snare/tom clips.

I know I want to have the D112 (never used second hand €150 reasonable price ?), but I'm having my doubts on the 418s... I never actually saw *anyone* using them on toms or snare.. Maybe I'd save up for some Senny MD421s and SM57s ??

Any comments ??

(man, check out AKG recommending a C414 per tom to record...maybe when I win the lottery  :p )

AKG is telling everyone to use 414's on toms????

DAMN! I thought that was my secret. I've been doing it for about a year now and get the best Tom sounds I've ever had.

Shit... now everyone will know!!! ;)

LOL. :D

Getting off my own topic here: once read about this guy using 3 U87 mikes on a drum kit (in front, above and side). He "could appreciate the sound".. :D :D

I have a C418 clip-on and always thought it sounded really slappy and harsh on the snare. Also think they sound shallow on toms. I'll stick with my SM57s for now.

Getting off topic, I've REALLY been digging the sound of (of all things:eek: ) AKG C-1000's on toms. Besides using them occassionally on guitar cabs, it's the only good use I've ever gotten out of them.

Try again...

I use a combination of C418's, C419's and MD421's on drums. The secret to 418's and 419's is position and distance. If they are too close to the head you get the slappy/harsh sound described earlier. If they are not positioned correctly in relation to each other, you get phase cancellation. You know, mic technique, that lost art?

I've gotten some of my best snare sounds with a 418. In fact, a Yamaha maple custom snare with coated ambassadors, a C418, into an API 512, inline into a 160VU, and a good drummer is probably my fave combo.

Depending on the drummer and snare I'll rotate between an SM57, a MD441, a C418, an MD421, and a V67. V67's are great 'cause if they get demolished by a monkey drummer, it's no big deal. I've gotten really great snare sounds with U87's and 414's, but I'm too chicken to use them on most drummers, for obvious reasons.

well I'm not an expert but I've been using sennheiser e604 on my toms a few times for live situations...they are easy to use, and they sound quite well, though I've heard them only on my kit. I have some doubts too on the akg, someone told me they are a bit bright. I'm not a fan of those drum packs, I prefer buying different brands.
