I have a question-am I the only one here who runs drum tracks through Distortion Units? (especially the Snare)

I use an ART SGE MachII.
Just wondering.

No, I'm not kidding about this.

A Snare is essentially "White noise", and Yo can distort the signal a bit, and it sounds pretty cool.

u talkin about like live drumming? or drum machine? I run a yammy Rx8 drum machine through a bass overdrive pedal and it sounds pretty good for grunging up the whole drum track or just pure "so loud your eyes will bleed!" industrial sounding. I just recorded a freinds band doing some kinda rapish metal song and man did it put limp bisquick to friggin SHAME with that drum track, put a whole dark edge to the whole song.

AHHAHAHAH!!!

We call them Wimp Brisket!

I live a few miles from Fred Thirsty's Mom's house (Durst is German for "Thirsty"). I hate to tell people I'm from Jacksonville-because they go-"Hey Limp Biskit!" Shit, I thought it was bad enough when we were only known for Skynyrd!

Yep. I use Distortion on real Drums as well as Drumtracks/samples.
They Suck and Ross R's Korn mixes suck.
What I hate is that Ross used to play in a metal band called Fear of God that I liked until their Singer Dawn Crosby died (well-she WAS F.O.G.-that was her whole baby)
Now he's producing all the rap Metal guys.
I hated what he did to COLD (another Jacksonville band). They at least had their own sound until Ross got ahold of them; then he ruined their sound.

it deffinetly works , though i think it really needs to be in the right song.. Korns kick sound , i always thought it was just a dry kick hit really hard when it went to tape , thus giving that peaking sound, but now im wondering if maybe a little distortion of some kind was used ... what does everyone else think??

Well,

It's running through a Hipass filter so the extreme lows are rolled off, and compressed all to hell-their whole mix is just really dry and in your face-which I DO like.
The part I don't like, is that I think there's too much low end on the guitars-which eats up some of the Bass guitar's range.
That's just my own take on it. I know alot of guys who are really into that sound.
To me that mixing formula is just a matter of "Compress and cut out all midrange".

The more time I've spent mixing, the more less midrange I find myself cutting- You cuyt out the mids, and you get a lifeless mix, not so much dynamic-wise, but just the overall sound.

I used to go for a drum sound that had NO mids at all-, but as time went on, I found that I like mids in the toms, so that they cut through well-I also found that I liked the drums tuned higher than alot of people so that they cut through really well.

something new, I have to try it

A CABRON!!! ESTO SI ES NUEVO PARA MI!!!

it means damn, this is new for me...

I definityli have to try it, drums with distortion.
I have the zoom 505, and the metalzone, I will try it with software distorcion and overdrive too.

I like the idea in the snare, because the white noise, I had never thougt about it before...

Spider is right, definityli have to be in the right song .

HEY TIM > you still having your secrets ha?

Hi Proveras,
We meet again! hahaha

Well, heck man, Figure if you're home recording-try EVERYTHING!

Think about it this way- One of the reasons that Analog sounds so good on drums is the tape Saturation-which is a form of distortion.
The Zoom unit will work fine, I've used the Zoom bass pedal for this.

When we first got the Zoom pedal, I was thinking-this thing is going to be a piece of crap-because it weighs virtually nothing, I thought it was going to be a hunk of junk-but it has some great sounds on it-and I LOVE it for recording bass guitar-it gives us a really good sound, without having to mess with it too much.

Our goal was to be able to flip 1 switch, and have the whole studio come on-and be ready to record.

So, I constantly have played with the sounds to get what I want out of the gear.
