Sorry for newbie type question here but figured the most knowledgable folks with info on my ? would be here. Recently purchased HS 2002 and am stumped on how to use or even find the drum features. Can anyone point me in the right direction for info on this subject as I haven't found it in Help section/tutorials or website? An explanation (in terms understood by my neophyte self) would also be greatly appreciated. thanks

There are a number of ways to get drums into Sonar. HS2002 has Session Drummer which is s good place to start:

right click on fx in a midi track, select Midi fx >cakewalk FX> session drummer. Choose a style and a pattern, load them to the song window. get the listings in the right order for your song. Press play in the main window and away you go.

Other methods include importing drum loops from the www, seach for drum loops and see the thousands that are out there. Then import your chosen loop into HS2002 to an audio track using the import audio commmand, point your browser to where you have the loop on your hard disk, select it and away you go. Using the Groove clip looping command, you can then drag your loop to the required length. http://www.loopasonic.net/

Another method is to select a soundfont drum sound and program in piano roll view a drum beat. http://samplecity.net/

Another way is to tap out a beat on your midi or qwerty keyboard with soundfont drum sounds. And then edit in piano roll view.
Best of luck!:)

The HS2002 CD already has a ton of ACIDized drum loops on it...

Let There Be Drums

Hi Strev,

Let's assume you want to create some drums tracks of your own (like I do!)

I'm going to make the following assumptions:
1) CakeWalk is open
2) The default Track View is visible
3) The HomeStudio1 - Track All tab is selected.
4) The tracks in descending order are
1: Audio 1
2: Audio 2
3: MIDI 1
4: MIDI 2

OK? Let's do it :)

Look for the FX box in Audio Track 1.
Right click on the two arrow heads <>
Click on DX Instruments
Click on VSC DXi

Either minimise or drag the Edirol VSC out of the way of the track view LH pane.

In MIDI 1, look for Ch None. Click on that and scroll down to Channel 10. That's the percussion channel.
Go to Out and it should read 1-General MIDI Drums. Click on that and choose 2-VSC DXi
Next, go to Bnk and click on 15360-GM2 Drum Set.
Go to Pch and click on Standard1

Now when you click on the Piano Roll view you will be able to see the names of each of the drums, cymbals and other percussive instruments.

Set up your tempo and use the selection tool to place the hi-hat, snare and whatever to your liking.

Easy really ;)

Have fun - and don't forget to save your work!

...All those replies should help you alot Strev. BTW, do you have any MIDI devices other than those DXi ? What's your sound card ? and do you know how MIDI works ?

;)

thanks

Thanks so much for the great info; especially the detailed instructions form Paul 881 and BluesMeister. What a great forum with plenty of helpful people. Hopefully when I get a handle on this stuff, I'll be able to return the favor someday.

Thanks...

Help is usually but a post away. :)

I have been struggling with HS2002 for a little over a month, but I've been a Walker of Cake for, oh must be nearly 7-8 years.

It doesn't prevent me from asking the most fundamental of questions though.

Really, I wouldn't want anyone beating their head against a wall like I did. Believe me, it hurts like hell ;)

Acknowledging help when it's been received is very much appreciated.
