Returned from the dead
Ok, so I'll be the first to admit that I don't know sh*t about drums or how they should sound. So I've been messing around with some drum sounds and I did a quick little drum mix the other day and this is it: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?5ixhjyuzhlz
Now, I had KCearl take a listen and tell me what he thought and after he gave me a few tips and pointers I did another quick mix: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ffnznvzzmd2

What I'm wanting to know is, do the drums sound even somewhat okay? and did my mix/drum sounds improve after receiving some tips and rethinking the way I should mix?

take it easy greg :D

I listened to both mixes. I tried to normalize the volume between the two as best I could, but mix two was waaaay louder. Just a couple of comments...

I liked whatever you did with the overheads on mix 2. They were more present and had more sizzle. They might have had a bit too much sizzle - so what ever you did there you might want to back off just a nudge. But it was an improvement over mix 1 where I thought the overheads were too dull. On both versions I noticed the balanced slightly leaned to the left. I'd probably try to adjust that.

I didn't like what you did with the snare on mix 2. What ever it was you did took a lot of the power out. I didn't see too much wrong with the snare in mix 1.

Lastly, no toms?

The snare on mix one had the snare drums bottom mic mixed way low in comparison with the snare drum top mic. When I got critique for the first mix I was told that the snare was too boingy so I did a little eq-ing and brought the snare bottom up in mix two. And this track doesn't have any toms, no...

I can see the boinginess as a valid criticism. But I tend not to mind it much. Did you invert the polarity on the bottom mic? Somehow it's taking the power out of the snare.

I sure didn't. I can give it a try in a little while when I get a few more free minutes htough.

le bump.

Any other critiques before I do a revised mix?

I've been meaning to listen, but haven't been able to sit and listen to anyone's stuff the past few days. Maybe tomorrow.

don't sweat it man.

have a good fourth;):)

Definitely invert the phase on the bottom of the snare. It sounds tinny. Kick could be louder. Other than that you can get some usable sounds. :)

Neither track sounds very good to me. If I had to choose, I'd say the first, less loud track sounds better. The robotic banging on the hats and cymbals don't sound natural at all.

Having said that, you need to get some instruments around the drums to really know how they're gonna sound. Drum tracks by themselves never tell you the whole story.
