we don't need rest!!
since this has to do with sound deflection/reduction..etc, thought I could get away using this forum rather than the drum forum.

I am looking at the drum sound shields to use at our church, and the inexpensive ones at Musicians Friend get such bad ratings, I am hesitant to even gamble the $200 to try one out. Essentially, they just seem to be panels of 1/4" plexiglass with a hinge system everyone bitches about. Either the review gives this product the worst possible rating, or on the other end, a great review while stating they don;t understand why everyone was so harsh in their comments about the product...as the sound shield worked great for them.

this is actually the more expensive one ($250)

anyrate...any opinions? Just looking to drop the stage volume a couple dB to help the singers. Nothing drastic, but $250 would be a small price if it even hinted to work.

These types of shields work fine for cutting down the overall volume of the drum kit, especially in close proximity. Before we went to electronic drums at my church we used one like this that we made ourselves to surround our acoustic kit. Once you got used to having it there, it was REALLY noticable whenever it was not in place. I don't know how much it actually reduced the sound level, but it was definitely noticeable.

If you wanted to try the DIY approach, you can get some large pieces of 1/4" plexiglass and attach the pieces together with piano hinges. I would recommend that you make it tall enough to be above the top edge of the highest cymbal.

Good luck,
Darryl.....

I think that the people with the negative reviews expected too much from a 1/4 inch piece of plexiglass that does not even go full height.

I think that it may improve the impression of volume rather than the actual volume.
