Hey. Sometime I'm going to be buying two mics for overheads for my drum set. I've been looking around, and the MXL 2006's look pretty good. http://www.music123.com/MXL-MXL-2006-i144706.music Do you have any other suggestions for mics that are great for overheads for drums and are only $99 each? If there are any mics better than these for the same price, I'd want to go with them. Thanks!

You've got several good choices here...

a pair of AT-2020 mid diaphragm condensers at around $99 each,
or a pair of Studio Projects B1 large diaphragm condensers at $70-$100 each,
or, if you look around and you're just lucky enough to find a pair of fairly well matched Oktava 012 small diaphragm condensers for $100 each...

what's the deal with a matched pair? what's the difference between a pair that's matched and one that isn't?

I haven't used mine yet, but also look at the MXL 604 for overheads.

Yes sir, in that price range that's a really decent choice.

The closer matched the frequency response and gain are for a pair of mics, the more accurate the stereo "soundstage" will be. It's a good thing, as Martha would say.

Check out the Joe Meek JM27 SDC also. After doing some research trying to find the best deal in pair of budget (but good quality) overeads, that is what I decided to go with. I am liking them so far.

what are the advantages for having SP B1s over MXL 604s, and vice versa?

A LDC like the B1, may pick up the toms better then a SDC like the 604. The 604 will have better transient response because it is a SDC, VS a LDC like the B1.

I've really been digging the Kel HM-1's I've been using. Great for keeping loud or harsh cymbals under control.....Plus they are right in you budget !!

i use Audio technica Pro-37r's. Theyre sort of unheard of, but i consider them one of my secret tricks (and so does Steve Albini, if that says anything). Theyre somewhat bright, but not too bright at all. $100 each. very very small mics.

I have the mxl 603s and they work extremely nice for overheads....i got them from guitar center about a year ago on sale for real cheap...i forget the price but i know it was like half of what they normally go for...

Hey Dizzy,
I'm a firm believer in using LDC condensers as drum overheads. . .especially for home recording projects. I think that the LDC mic's as overheads give me a fuller and much more balanced sound from the drum-kit, . . especially when your not individually mic'ing all your toms. . . So, I think that you will get some pretty good results from those MXL-2000's. I've been using the MXL-V67G as overheads for some time now with excellent results. . . here is a review: http://www.mojopie.com/v67.html However, if you plan on close mic'ing all your toms, . .then you might consider using a pair SDC condensers, like the MXL-603's. . .

I have also recorded the drums in mono, . . using only a (3) mic set-up, . .one MXL-v67G as Overhead, a SM57 on the snare, and a Audio Technica Pro-25 on the Kick drum, . . with Phenomenal results. Depending on the type of music of course. . .

So, I don't think you can go wrong with either the MXL-2000, or a SP B-1, or the MXL-v67G as overheads, . .and they are all in your price range too.

PS. I took a look at your drum kit, . and I dig your Pearl Masterworks man-- very tasteful setup. . .How many mics, are you planning on using to mic your kit, . and were you planning on using them for recording, or live gigs?

i bought a pair of the mxl 604's from GC 3 months ago for $170. they've worked well for me so far. the pad and the roll-off are nice features. they aren't a matched pair though. but a matched pair is really only necessary for a true stereo recording. unless you are using them in x-y then matched doesn't make as much of a difference.

The Oktava MK-012 is a fine mic for O/H. after doing the "Scott Dorsey" mods, they are great mics for O/H

Very good overheads without a low-end roll-off for under $100.ea - AT2020.
Excellent overheads with pad and roll-off for $100 and then some - AT3035.

The AT2020 has a medium diaphragm, and works pretty well for picking up mostly cymbals and high-end...though tom and snare still come through.

The AT3035 has a large diaphragm(LDC's do rule), and works pretty well picking up everything from cymbals to bass...including any weird noises your body makes while you play.
