Hey all, I recently bought a SP B-1 that I like a lot. I realized now though that perhaps I should have bought a pair of them to use as stereo drum overheads. Do you think I should go with another SP B-1 and use them together for this purpose? Or should I perhaps invest in another pair of mics, (say a pair of SDC, like the Oktava MC-012's) and use those solely for overheads? I'd like to keep the price down, so if the pair of SP B-1's will do the job great then so be it, but if you think I'd have much more versatility in something else then please tell me... Thanks in advance!

I know Dot (who runs the listening sessions) is a big fan of B1s as overheads, maybe he will chime in.

The B1's will work as OH's but I'm a big fan of having more mics so I have more mics to choose from when recording... and most of the time I prefer SDC over LDC as OH... and the MC-012 are nice OH mics... I'd get the MC-012's.

I would get the mc-012s. Having more mics is beter than less. the mc-012s are very good on accoustic guitar and other things, you can't go wrong with them.

i've been having some pretty good results of late with a mixed pair of OH's--an SP B1 (more over the left/hihat side of the kit) and a v67 (over the right/ride side of the kit). this has given me a pretty fat sound, the B1 and my snare work real well together, and the v67 tames the harshness of the cymbals (zild a's and k's) in my crappy room.

before that i was using a pair of mxl 603's and they brought out all the bad things about my cymbals--love em on guitar, though. i'd like to pick up a set of mc012's at some point, but i have too little patience to sift through em at GC and don't really want to shell the cash out for a soundroom pair just yet.......

cheers,
wade

I have a matched pair of Oktava MK-012 which I use for drum overheads. They are very good for this. I previously used to use a pair of black AKG C3000s or Rode NT1s, but the Oktavas are so much better. They're also great for acoustic guitar. I used to use an AKG C4000B for this, but the MK-012 sounds better.

I've heard that the B1 works well as a tom mic, so you may want to buy another couple to use them for that purpose. If you were thinking of using something like an SM57 it may not quite capture enough bottom end to do the toms justice.

You may find the B1 good as a room mic or for distant micing a guitar amp. I know my Rode NT1s do a good job like this.

What you buy to use where is probably down to how much money you've got to spend and what type of sound you are trying to capture.

Pete.
