Hey guys,

I'm a multi-instrumentalist looking to take up drums as well. I can play some basic beats and keep pretty good time, and I'd like to get better to the point where I could lay down some tracks for my songs at my home studio.

I have a few questions:

1) How much could I expect to pay for a decent used kit? (kick, snare, 2 toms, hat, a few cymbals)

I don't want a beginner kit, but I want something that could achieve fairly pro sounding results with proper recording techniques. I know you can pay as much as you want, but there are standard choices that are capable of pro-sounding results. (For instance, in the guitar world, you can't go wrong with an American Fender Strat, which can be had used for about $500-$600)

2) I really love the drum sounds of the Black Crowes (especially on the Southern Harmony Musical Companion album). Does anyone know what drums he uses or what would be a fairly good start?

Thanks much for any help.

Oh, and by the way, budget is a concern, but not a terribly burning one, as I can by the kit piece by piece if necessary. I don't want to drop $5,000, but I know I'm not going to get something usable for probably less than $1,000 right?

Get a used set of Grestch renowned maple. That kit will rock and sounds amazing. Can't go wrong.

Hm... Do u want cymbals included?

For $1,800, you get a 7 piece drum set (if you choose to get the 8x7 tom as a free gift, but u wud need to buy a separate mount for that one), along with a hardware pack and a set of nice Sabian AAX Stage cymbals.

The Gretsch Renown would cost more (maybe 200 or 300 more). Gretsch has rounder bearing edges, so the drums are fatter and warmer. The Mapex has sharper bearing edges, so the drum will be brighter and have more attack.

Thanks for the link. Fatter and warmer definitely sounds better to me. But ... I could not know what I'm talking about. All I know is what sounds good to me, and the Black Crowes drum sound on that album really sounds good. (Of course, I know there's the room involved, miking techniques, signal chain, and everything else).
