drum mix

Hi all and Merry Christmas :)

I've just started to track the next song our band is doing and I've done a mix of the drums to see where we're at. The song is kinda funky punky rock :p with quite a loose feel to it

On a scale of 1 -10 how "professional" do u guys think the drums sound at this stage? The reason I ask is I've never really heard what a pro drum recording sounds like on its own and would like to get an idea of how far off we are gonna be from getting a "pro" sound overall. The quality of drums and Vox are, it seems, very important to how the song turns out and I thing the drums may be our weak link due to not having a particularly good room or mics (or recording technique!! )

Sounds pretty good man. ( the "fattened up" version ) Sounds like the bass drum could come up a bit but that's just a personal thing. You just have to make sure it doesn't get buried when the guitars come in. Otherwise, sounds good man, but don't take my word for it, I'm just listening on dinky computer speakers. There could be some mysterious EQ issues I can't hear. :) How did you record this? ( Mic placement, selection, etc. ) Would be interested to know.
 
OH! And post the whole song once it's finished. I wanna hear it!
 
Well no flubs and good solid,steady drummin'...can't really tell without the rest of the song how the mix is gonna be so...but I think it sound fine:D.Nice cymbal sound.Really like the stick clack and the seat squeek too(JK):D
 
It sounds a bit dry for me. Try putting some more reverb on the snare or turn it down a bit so it's not so upfront. And when you put reverb on drums you should make sure that it's mostly the same type of reverb so it doesn't sound like you recorded the snare in one room and the toms in another.

Good recording though. You certainly captured the drum sound well and with clarity. The bottom line to remember though is what the drums sound like with all the other instruments mixed in. That will determine if it's a good sound.

Keep it up, great recording. Rating- 8/10 just a few reverb and some minor level tweaks needed but very solid.

I used 6 mics, akg cheap bass drum mic, slightly inside the front skin pointing just off center. some weird looking mic i've not heard of on the snare pointing again just off center about 2 inches over the rim. 1 sm57 on each tom. A c1000 on the left overhead about 2.5 feet above the 2nd crash/chinese and a little shure small dia' condenser (dunno what model) on the other side, same height pointing at the edge of the hats (my pair of matched small dia condensors arived 2 days later.... doh!! ). The snare mic went into a joe meek mq3 then direct to my card (sta dsp2000) the rest went to my mates cheapy behringer mixer - to the card. Loads of damping in and around the kit as i recorded it upstairs :o was boomy as hell to start with.

W.I.S.C. : I frowned at him a lot when he started shuffling about :p

Tukkis: Thanks. I'm pretty new to the whole "doing reverb properly" idea. I used to just whack some on and hope it was ok :p I have put a bit more on now and it does sound better :) Thanks.

I'll post a version with the guides on once the vox are in so u guys have a reference :)

sound spretty good to me...i thought i heard a bit of compression (breathing ) right at the begining..
but i like that dull thumpy bass drum sound alot.
maybe its the cymbals that are making that noise that SOUNDS like compression???...

gonna be good though, i think the drums sounds pretty sweet!!

good snare sound in my opinion.

Thanks Jamal and Balshazza, not sure what that sound is Jamal, could be an overlap of the cymbals where i cut it? Or could just be compressed too much (more likely :D )
