"Hi, I'm in Delaware."
I have a Gretsch renown maple kit with a zildian a pack of cymbals, which I'm pretty happy with, but I bought a mixer off of ebay a little while ago and am trying to see about recording some stuff. I was looking into CAD mics, mostly because they're cheap and I can't justify spending much money on them (since right now recording is just for fun; I plan on making it a business later). I've looked mostly at two sets of mics that are (right now) in my range of less than $100: a http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7357397559&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1]pro-7 set and a 5-piece set. They both come with the same mics, except the 7 piece has the extra condensors that I could use for cymbals, which would be nice. So my questions are, are these at least halfway decent mics or do they completely suck (keep in mind this is not for professional recording, altho I might record band stuff to try and market ourselves later on), and will a mixer typically be able to power the condensors or do I need to but a separate power source (I ought to know this but it slips my mind)? Thanks.

The mixer should be able to power condenser microphones, thats called phantom power, but it depends on the mixer. I would say that, yes, typically a mixer would be able to. As for the CAD mics...I really can't say, but for $200 for a whole set of 7 mics, the quality would most likely not be very good. Again, I haven't used them so I can't say for sure. :)

Although I have never used them, They don't seem that amazing... But they suit what your looking for especially if you have a tight budget. Go for the 7 peice if you can, the condensers are the important part if you are set on this package. You could also buy a seperate set of condensers a 57 and some kind of bass drum mic and be set for a little more money but a little better quality.

Well 3 good mics will sound alot better then 7 cheap mics. If all I had was $100 I have no idea what I would do. Maybe a sm57 and save up for more mics?

If its just for refrence and not really for recording and selling I'd go for that pack as a toy.

Thanks for your help. How about an Audix Fusion 6-pack? That seems to go for around $300 new, but like $70 on ebay, so I can't tell if that's a reflection on quality or not (it got some pretty bad reviews on Musician's Friend, but only like 2 or 3 out of 20). As it turns out, $70 is about all I can afford right now, so if you have any suggestions as to what I might be able to find (on ebay) for aroun d there, thanks.

Oh, and Nady mics. I saw another forum in here where they were demoing different sounds people had gotten, the first post being with "crap" mics (the Nadys) that seemed to sound really good to everyone (of course, maybe he spent months getting it perfect, but still if I can do that I'd be happy). Opinions?

If you can find one of those Fusion packs for $70 go for it, that's silly cheap. They aren't bad, in fact this demo stuff was done with the Fusion 6 maybe 4 years ago:

Snare was SM57 back then, but was replace with Drumagog during mixdown. But toms, kick and overheads are Fusion. The mixer was an Alesis32 my buddy had, we were recording in his bedroom (me on drums and keys).
