Drum mics, again...

That SMART guy.
So, I almost decided which mics to buy (SM57 for snare, Sennheiser e604 for toms, and Beyer TGX50 for kick unless you talk me out of it), and then this gets in my head...

I only have one overhead mic (AKG C3000B)... Wouldn't it be better to get a good stereo pair, and leave out the tom mics? This stereopair is usefull in other situations too...
I also have limited tracks (no more than 8 rec tracks at a time), so I can't mic the whole kit w/ stereo overheads, and get the bass/guitars on it at the same time. Can make a submix of the toms, however...

Another thing to consider with the overheads is that I record in very bad rooms. I haven't got a room myself, so I do remote sessions all the time... But they will allow me to record classical concerts and jazz-jams very easily. (But that's not what I'll get payed for... The rock-demo stuff pays...)

What do I do? Maybe get the complete mic set, and some very cheap small condensors? Or a more expensive stereo pair?
The music I record is mostly rock stuff, and worse... :D

I think you should get a pair of overheads. As far as what you should get, thats open for discussion. If money is a concern, you could get a pair of Rode NT3's (I like them), or perhaps better yet, someplace (I can't remember where) has a deal on a pair of C1000S's. The best sounding drums I've heard around here are Emeric's and he uses (correct me if I'm wrong on this & you happen to see it, Emeric) Sennheiser 421 and/or D112 (kick), 57's on toms and snare, and C1000s as overheads.

His setup is fairly economical and I swear, I haven't heard better drums around here.

As for your question about tracking with toms mixed...its really up to you how to handle it, but that's a pretty good solution to your problem. Toms have a way of popping up in a mix fairly rarely compared to everything else, during breaks and stuff, so if you're going to collapse anything, it might as well be toms. It's really a matter of preference and style of music I think.

Better then mine ?!?!?!?!?!!?!?

As Cmiller said , go with the Overheads. Forget the tom mics (for now).

I'll have to look at my MP3 playlist for your stuff, man. As soon as my recording computer is alive again I'll check you out.

Owkej...

Overheads it is. Might just spend just that little more and get the tom mics anyway. The better my setup, the better my results will be, the more I can ask...

Now I have to decide which overhead mics... Aiaiai. That's gonna take another month before I get to spend anything.
I'd love to have AKG 414's. Any cheap copies of those somewhere? (There good for overheads, but I just want them for sax and what else... I heard them once... aouch...)
