FYI,

you'll need a pair of overheads on top of those.

The only "better deal" he's going to get is on a Nady pack. And that's not necessarily a better deal...just less money.

About 1-2 years ago there was a lot of talk and praise about the Red5 Audio drum mics on this forum and some others as well... At that time, I was planning on recording a drum kit and bought a set that contained 1 kick drum mic and 4 snare/tom mics... The kit was called: "RVK5 Drum kit microphone set"

That project blew over and I never recorded the drum kit, so I still have these unused, in the case, so I can't speak for the sound quality, but the construction quality of these are GREAT! Very well made and heavy pieces.

I bought mine from http://www.soundpure.com I'm pretty sure that you can get the entire kit through them, INCLUDING OVERHEADS for about $300 even...

Might be worth checking out...

And a really short stand for the kick. Don't forget that. :)

The only advice I have is don't buy overheads from the same manufacturer as your dynamic kit mics. Most companies that do one well don't do the other well, and vice versa. Shure makes great dynamics, but their condensers generally lack bass response.

Oh, and don't buy Nady. Their kick mic sounds awful, IMHO. P.S. Anybody want to buy a lightly used DM-90? :D

I have the Shure PG 6 set.
I bought in addition the Shure SM57 for the snare.
I recommend it, excellent deal!

I think you'd probably be better off with a good kick mic (AKG D112 or Beyer M88) , a SM57 halfway between hihat and snare, and a cheapo overhead condenser (MXL / Oktava) 4 feet above the drummer's head pointed at his kick drum knee.

If you get those three mics in balance you'll probably learn lots about mic placement, choosing the room, drum tuning, and how bad your drummer is.

Everyone needs sm57's and the 52A isn't a slouch for kick. It's a good starting point in my opinion. You'll still want over heads as someone else pointed out earlier.

I asked my drummer to purchase the Shure Drum Mic Package ($399), http://www.guitarcenter.com/Shure-Drum-Mic-Package-101161255-i1126540.gc. He didn't like the price and said that he would look for a "better deal". In your opinion, does a better deal exist? (neglecting used gear)

look at the equation mtd drum mic packs, and i am assuming you are talking about the pg 6 pack, I sell them for 350.00 so yes there is always a better deal, there are also many other packs. The shures are probably the closest to their respective copys though.
