I need to buy some mics for recording a drum set. Does anybody have any suggestions on what I should buy?

I know Shure makes a kit. Does anyone know if thats worth the $400?

for drums Im not a fan of kits....i rather buy mics separately......

If your willing to spend the $400 for the shure kit you can probably pick up some very useful mics in the same price range. It all really depends on what type of drum sound your going for though. If you don't need to close mic everything you could get by with a 3 or 4 mic combo and still prob fall at or under the $400 price range. More info would be very helpful.

I got a decent kit micing setup. I echo buying mics separate for the best sound.

I have:

AT 25 pro for kick $40 ebay
ADK SC1's for OH $100/pr ebay
SM57 for snare $80 new
RS Sennheiser knock offs for toms $30/pr new/clearance

I will try to post some drum tracks soon. I had them all set up and tracking for the first time this week for my new album, and I was blown away. Best $250 drum sound you've ever heard!!

Why not just use more SM57's on the drums? Or is that too expensive?

if all you have are SM57's you can do a decent job...but its a matter of getting the right mic for each part of the kit......

each drum in a kit is so different from each other and therefore the best mics for each are going to be just as different......

I recently picked up a pair of the Sennheiser e609s. In addition to begin great on guitar cabs, they also work well on snare and toms. If you shop around you can pick these up at around the same price as an SM57. (I paid $80 each)

For overheads, you might want to try the MC012. Good price/performance ratio.

You can never have enough kick mics... :)

Right now, I turn to a Shure Beta 52 and a CAD E-100. And sometimes both when I've got another channel to use...

Now that i've got 18 ins on my computer, I think I'm going to do more double miking on my drum kit components... :)

2-at pro25s bass, floor tom
3-sm57s small floor tom, tom, snare
2-mxl603s cymbols

Hoe soon are you gonna record? Is it a 5 piece? How many times are you gonna record? You can always rent mics if its a one time job and save yourself some $$ and get some good mics for the recording.
