Drum machine or sampler?

Hello.
Forgive me for my lack of knowledge....but I need to know what's going to be best for me...a drum machine or a sampler..or something else for that matter.
Basically I want to play live with a drum machine...(think The Kills for example).
I want to be able to press play and let the drums play a whole song from start to finish. I want to be able to programme it so it automatically plays different sections of the song say verse beat, chorus beat, verse beat and so on. Also I want to use my own drum sounds.
If anyone has any info on what would work best, it would be much appreciated.
Cheers!

Have you looked in to Ableton Live? It sounds like it would be perfect for you. Check it out at Ableton.com

Hey. Thanks for your reply.
I've tried ableton but I'm wanting to use hardware over software. Plus my computer's prone to crashing every so often. You don't know a drum machine/sampler that could do this do you?
Cheers.

I have a drum machine and a sampler. I'm loading the sounds from the drum machine into the sampler, and then selling it. With a drum machine you get pre-loaded sounds, without the option of adding new sounds. With a sampler you load your own sounds into it. What it sounds like you need is a sampler. What I use is Native Instruments Maschine. What this is, is a sampler that has hardware integrated into the software. The hardware and software mirror eachother, so you can do anything you want from either. Another plus with Maschine is you can use it as a midi controller in different DAWs, Ableton Live being one of them. I think this is perfectly designed with what you are looking to do.

Hi thanks for your info Bugs McNair.
I've been looking at Akai MPC's. Mostly the 500 because it's the cheapest. Would that be able to do what I want and play a whole song through?

Thanks again!

The MPC's are great as well. But I'd recommend springing for atleast the MPC1000(My favorite being the 2000XL). However, you probably won't regret purchasing the 500. It can do everything you've asked for and more. Not to plug the Maschine again, but it's $600 new. But if you want to work exclusively with hardware, MPC's are the way to go, for sure.

I highly recommend a Yamaha RM1X for what you'd like to do...along with a sampler by it's side.
The Yamaha RM1X will do everything you want to do and some...except for process external sounds.
Though the sounds/samples it already has,...are phenomenal.
There are plenty of vids on youtube of what this badboy can do.
Hardware is the way to go for a live setup.

Use a drum machine to program your patterns because it's easier that way. Then use the drum machine to play samples on the sampler so you're not limited to just the built-in samples on the drum machine.

Thanks for everyone's reply!
I've also been looking the Korg Electribe. Would anyone recommend that?..or am I just confusing myself now?
Cheers!

Highly recommend the Korg ES-1 Electribe.
I've got all the Electribe series,...and the ES-1 will be perfect for what you'd like to do.
Make sure you get an sd card for though,...for extra sampling time.
The built-in effects are very usable, especially in a "real time" live situation.

The ES-1 is a sampler with a drum machine/samples built into it.

I have all three of the original series too. The ER-1 is a drum synthesizer. The EA-1 is an analog modeling synth for non-drum sounds. You can daisy-chain them with the MIDI THRU ports to sync two of the units to the first one and program a complete song with step sequencing techniques.
