I am trying to compare the Aphex Expressor (no longer available new), the RNC and the Presonus BlueMax and the Presonus ACP-22 compressors. I
would like to compress both kick and snare. I'm not
exactly sure how to describe the effect I'm trying to
achieve, but I think I would describe it as "bringing
it up in the mix". I'm not sure if I want to "squash"
the sound but I definitely would like to "fatten" up
the sounds. I'm looking for a quality compressor and
have heard good things about all of these units. My
biggest question is can the RNC color the sound? I
have heard it is extremely transparent. I am willing
to buy two separate units, one for kick and one for
snare. If you could give me your opinions on which
unit would work best for each drum I would really
appreciate it. Thanks very much. Again, my biggest question is can the RNC color the sound?

I prefer the acp-22. The others you listed are stereo compressors that have one set of controls. The acp-22 can be linked for stereo or used as two mono compressors. It is also better in sound quality compared to the blue max. I don't know for sure about the RNC as I don't use them. I hear the RNC can pop and click with certain types of input signals. Drums would worry me. The acp-22 also has better gating and a de-esser I think. If it were me I would get the acp-22. It will also handle both the drums you mentioned very nicely.
