Made of rubber...
We are gearing up to record a 5 song EP for promotion and fun. The style is acoustic rock/adult contemporary...
I was hoping some of you would give me feedback on this drum track. Drum sounds, mix, recording technique, mic placement, spectral balance.....Especially if you have an acoustically correct-ish room... Wondering about the mix and sounds of individual drums. This is pretty straight without any EQ or plugins. ( The kick has been eq-ed) There is a slight amount of verb on the bus also.
This was recorded at our tracking studio with the new mackie 1640i and Sonar 8.
Two AT 4041overheads for cymbals.
AKG d112 on the kick.
snare(beta 56)
Two toms(misc)

"Drum Check" and "Drum Check with scratch band"

Thanks!!

Not bad dude. ;)

Kinda hard to tell when it's not in the context of the mix but I'd think a little more crack outta the snare and some oomph outta the kick.

Where do ya have the 52? Inside? How close? Outside? Reso head or not?

The stereo spread sounds fine (to me anyway) and I think you've captured the kit as a whole rather well.

Maybe throw down some scratch guitar n bass and see how well it plays with others. :)

Thanks for the input, I just put up a snipit with the scratch band on the song. Take a listen...

How would YOU get more oomph in the kick? The mic is inside the drum which has no outside head and is mated to another kick drum with no head to create a tube. The whole thing is encased in a blanket. The mic is about half way inside I think.... My friend is in charge of the placement as I am newer to engineering.

Cant we keep our contest private? Sounds good Doug. ;)
Sounds louder than mine....

haha, no way, lets see what the fans (hehe) think.

Sounds good to me. I'm listening through crappy headphones, though. One thing, which may or may not apply, because of the headphones, but the highs of the hats and the lows of the kick seemed to distort.

All in all, the set sounded pretty good. The whole set seemed a bit distant, but whether or not that's a "good thing" is totally subjective. Definitely not an "in your face" mix by any means, but pretty laid back, and relatively distant set.

If I find the time tonight, I'll take a listen through my monitors at home.

All in all, sounds like it recorded well.

*note* - the sound is only going to be as good as the drum kit being recorded. The kit in this recording sounds very generic. Nothing stands out as being "amazing" about it, but that has more to do with the kit than with the studio.

I downloaded your kitcheck, and played it while looking at a freq graph on WMP. The bass drum was real weak down low...so I boosted 31 & 62 Hz +14 and +9 respectively.

I couldn't hear the snares on the lower head real well....and I saw that 2000 and 4000Hz were kinda not quite there. Boosted them freqs a little...+5 and +2. I can hear a little more thud and resonance on the bass drum...and the snare sounds healthier to me.

Then I reset the EQ flat.....and it sounded a little card-boardie.

So, that's where I started to make the track please my ears more. YMMV

Thanks for replying. Yea, the kit isnt special, but Robs not a bad drummer so that helps!

JFP: I take back what I said about the kick on your mix. Mine has more of the oomph here on the Tannoys. Yours sound kind of hollow but higher in EQ than mine. I hear more noise floor in yours too. But that may be because yours is louder, Im trying to listen at the same levels though.

Conversely I like your snare. And overall its a hotter mix. That fits with our personal tastes also, which is kind of a cool thing about this comparison mixing.

ps, sorry Im being a bitch today dug, hadn't had my "meds" yet... :o

Jeff, whos mix are you working with? Thanks for the input!

We talked about a mic under the snare....I think we ran out of mics?

I d'loaded the second of two at the link...the one with verb....

That sounds better....I couldn't A/B because there's no download button on that link. But it sounds good to me...except I prefer to have a little more sub 100Hz boot on the BD....a looser head....maybe? I'm a guitar player. FWIIW :^)

Sounds pretty good to me. The kicks a little shy on bottom end. Once you get it in a mix I think you'll need to add some cetered around 60 hz or so.

Bout as much as I can say without it being in a song.

Good Job!

Thank you for the reply. The next song on my ReverbNation site is the drums in context, unless you got sidetracked by JFrankParnell's mixes....Judging from your comments on the kick I think you may have....go here.

I'll try and listen more tomorrow. I just shut everything down for the night. I only listened to the drum check track. I did not see that you had two you wanted listened to. The drum check track is def low on kick bottom. My monitors represent lows very well.
