Hello,
So obviously SKB roto molded cases are the best and the Nomad cases are a waste of money. But how do the Gator roto cases compare to the SKBs? They're about half the price.

I need hard cases before summer. Does anyone have any input?

Thanks so much!

Wow, so what's wrong with the Nomad ones? They're a good price and get the job done.

The Gators are made of a different kind of plastic, that is both thinner and harder, meaning it will crack more easily. Now for day to day bumps and bruises associated with load-outs and sharp left turns, the Gators will do just fine. However...in the event of a legit accident whereby your gear is launched across three lanes of on-coming traffic, the drums may survive one or two bounces off someone's windshield, but that's it...and the Gator cases will be destroyed. The SKB's can absorb a lot more impact, and not only will your drums live to play another gig, the cases will too.

If...
your drums are insured, you are your own roadie, and you're more concerned with rashes and scratches associated with life in the back of a tour van as you zip across the American Midwest, then I suggest you skip the hard cases altogether and go with Protection Racket bags.

well first of all my drums have a finish and not a wrap. they are much more prone to getting messed up. i already have soft cases and i can see where the zipper has nicked the finish if it got hit hard enough.

My band and our label's sister band are going on tour together this summer. I am definitely not going to be the only one handling my drums.

the nomad cases you can tell are cheap. The handles are put on with rivets and i can see them just falling apart.

if anyone has had good luck with nomad cases please let me know!

thanks guys

I have had the nomad cases for 4 years.
I dont tour, but I play regularly traveling about maybe 2-5 hours max. I handle my own gear traveling in my own truck or station wagon.
The cases are just now failing on my kick drum. The tuning lugs are poking thru the cases where I have repeatedly stacked and moved the kit on a dolly.

They would have lasted longer if I had bought some rubber pads (like the thick floor mats from the local Tractor Supply place) and cut them to fit in the bottom of each half of the lid.

The finish (black see through stain) has never been compromised due to the cases , although "helpers" have scratched them plenty.

If I could afford 3-4 hundred for cases I'd go with the best I could, but for the lean wages of this musician and the controlled handling... they haved worked well for me.

I think my next cases (I'll probably build myself) will be a trap case for the drums and a seperate one for the hardware that I can heave onto a four wheel dolly and push.

I'm with tmix, if I could have afforded better at the time, I would have gotten better; however, I've had good luck with the Nomads. I've used them about as much as tmix said he does and mine are still going strong. They're a great deal, I think.

ok right on!
cheap sounds good to me

does anyone know if the nomad cases can fit tom suspension mounts? mine are similar to the tama starclassic ones

thanks !

....

Protechtor are my favs, I've toured for eight years and those and my H&B cases have held up the best. I've had stuff go wrong with the SKBs.

Just my two cents.
