Drop down tunings for vocalists

I find that when singing in a lower key, my voice sounds/is less strained and I can sing for longer intervals. Like Eb rocks.

However, it seems recorded songs have a tendancy to be in a higher key than live shows. Why exactly is that?

I do some of my stuff in low B....Mainly just because it sounds more ominous....
