They are good solid compressors. Typically you will find them in nicer live racks, but there is no reason they could not be used in the studio as well. If you are looking at the one for sale here, I certainly would not regard it in the same light that the seller does (on his EBAY link). I definately would not consider it to be the "best compressor under $2k" and I do not know anyone who would so I would imagine that phrase was pretty well made up by the seller. I would however prefer it to the DBX 160 on the market today (not the SL version). In the end though, the Drawmer stuff is built really well, and has a good warm sound with excellent features and control.

It was the compressor that Behringer sort of ripped off to make the Composer. A very good source of mine claims right on down to the circuitry, the original Composer's copied it.

I have used both. I gotta say, if you can find an Austrian made Composer, it works every bit as good. :)

i've gotta say that i do own a pair of orriginal composers and they do really sound good. i know behringer has a crappy reputation but i stand by my ears on this one. i've tried the older models of the composer and they are absolute crap compared to the early ones.

I've also used the dl241 and like it quite a bit i see a lot of similarities between the orriginal composer and the dl241 but they are a little different. i find the drawmer to be a little more transparent

I have a Drawmer DL241. I only use it in my live rig (solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar), but I have tried it in my studio.

It's an excellent unit - in the transparent and clean camp, with a bit of warmth. Pleasing sound overall. The limiter is nice too. Plus there manual or automatic controls, stereo linking, plus a gate.

I chose it over the FMR RNC in side by side comparisons for my uses. It's a better unit, sonically, plus it has more features.

Plus it is a true two channel design, not a mono controlled stereo unit like the RNC.

The Drawmer unit though originally sold for about $1000 when it debuted many years ago as I recall. It BETTER sound better than the RNC at about 4 or 5 times the cost!

I remember when the original Behringer Composer's were $700 new! I remember when they dropped to half of that, and the audio world was screaming that the end was near! It was getting pretty good reviews as a $700 compressor, and at $300-400, it was an incredible buy!

I sorely miss the two Austrian made units I used to own and sold about 5 years ago. :( They were very clean compressors and did a very good job. No, they are not the kind of compressor that does really well when you slam the holy living hell out of them, but for the 1-12dB (and especially in the 1-6dB) gain reduction range, they do pretty good!

The Drawmer might beat out the Composer. Most of my use with the Drawmer unit was live, and only a couple of hours in a studio, and never side by side with the Composer.
