DR-44WL display does not show all details

Hello, I'm a complet newbie to this device, though not unexperienced in fiel recording.
On starting the device, the display does not show what it should show according to the manual.
The headline - where status of speed, key,reverb etc. should be shown - is missing.
What is my fault here?

The manual contains a Start Up Procedure. A specific order must be followed upon Start Up.

The start up procedure does not feature anything "special" that isn't self-understanding.
But I discovered in the "Quick"-Menue (which isn't mentioned in the manual at all) the setting for speed etc.. And, if set to anything unequal zero, the respective tag appears on the screen. Example: When "speed" is set to 1.2, the playback display will show "speed+" on the top line.
All in all, the manual appears to be quite curt - to the point of incomplete (e.g. the "Quick"-menue).

If you didn't know there are two manuals for the DR-44WL. One is like an overview and the other more complete. I found this out for my DR40X when I wasn't finding info that I thought should be in the manual

The Reference Manual appears to have a section for the 'Quick Menu'
