I'm sure this would be to good to be true but, is it possible to use a USB harddrive with a DP02CF?

Simply put---no. Digital Recorders which use flash memory can only use their specified media. I can't be sure about the DP02, but in the case of the two Boss BR decks that my wife and I own but the only media they will accept are 1GB CF cards, and not CF II Ultra or multiple gig cards. Find a good source, because CF cards are no longer being made.
Your, operating system on the DP02 won't recognize an external hard drive as recording media. Even if the os could do so, the usb port is only set up as a transfer interface. Now if there were an adapter similar to the old cd to cassette type, where you have a cf card wired up to a usb cable, then you might have something. But then your next obstacle is how much of that hd is the os on the recorder going to recognize? If it only uses 1GB, then you've wasted a lot of effort.
Call Tascam support and find out how large and what speed CF card you can use, then go buy as many as you can find.
Your other options are to record to a computer-based DAW (defeats the point of being portable) or record on the deck then record into the DAW, usb drag and drop, or plug your recorder-formatted CF card into the card reader and still drag and drop.

I'm sure you're right. Another thought is buying a less expensive laptop an using primarily as a harddrive. My thinking is the specs wouldn't have to be great since it would not actually be used to record.

Just curious, how come you didn't go for the DP-02 vs. the DP-02CF if you are basically looking for a built-in hard drive?

I'm running an 8gb card in mine and it has created (3) 2gb partitions for recording tracks. I'm assuming a small portion of the other 2 gb is for the partition table, and the rest is for the import/export FAT partition. You would have to export the tracks to be able to access them via USB. The tracks are recorded in a proprietary format and aren't accessible when you hook up the recorder via USB. You are indeed dead on in not being able to utilize an external drive connected to the recorder.;)

CF Cards

I recently received my dp-02cf and would like to get a supply of 8g cards. Can you tell me which are compatible and a good source?

I've been using SanDisk or Kingston (I can't remember the name offhand, don't have one in front of me) brand CF cards and haven't had any problems. I've put down 2 hour recordings on them at a time and haven't had any glitches or hickups. I just by mine from the local Fry's electronics store. I'm sure if you search around a bit, you can find them for cheaper, but I just prefer to be able to run down the road and pick a few when I want/need them instead of waiting for shipping. That's just me though.;)
