DP-24 Foot Switch Alternatives

Has anyone come up with ways to use another foot switch with the DP-24 instead of the overpriced RC-3F? I just tried a two button guitar foot switch, and it didn't do anything, but that might have been the crazy signal chain I had to use since I didn't have a simple 1/4 female TRS to male 2.5 mm TRS adapter. Thought I'd post here before I hit Monoprice for the right adapter.

from what i gather, the RC-3F is active (it has electronics inside and is powered by batteries) unlike the passive switch-and-wire type.

active types use coded pulses which allow them to have more functions than there are wires to carry them, instead of just simply sending one of the contacts high or low like a switch does

--> yep, confirmed. it is a battery powered active 3-way switch. substituting passive switches won't work.
