I'm just curious. Has anyone ever tried to defragment the FAT partition through your pc? Is this even possible? I know you can "reform" it through the main menu (which is basically the same thing right?). I just wondered if maybe doing it through the pc would be a better idea, especially if you didn't want to wipe all of your files off it in the process.

Defragmenting and formatting are not the same thing. formatting deletes all data, and defragmenting takes files that are fragmented into several pieces and rearranges things so that they are put together into one piece.

Files only fragment when there isn't room between whatever start and end locations where it stores the data on the disk. So unless you've got a lot of stuff on the fat drive there is probably no need to do it.

but i don't know whether one can treat the fat drive like a pc hard drive and defrag it or not. it seems logical but i don't know. i'd ask tascam. phone them and get connected to their technical department. there's an 800 number on the back of the manual.
