Well, after 16 hours of manual dumping, we finally have managed to export the raw tracks of a 13 song CD from a VS1824CD to Pro Tools. Woo Hoo. What a royal pain in the ass!
We had to use the metronome in my Korg PXR4 to put a click track on track 1, then track copy it to all the other tracks in any given song. Then, panning the tracks hard left and hard right in pairs, we exported the tracks to Pro Tools, 2 at a time, in real time, by S/PDIF, into Pro Tools, then synch the tracks manually, using the click track.
THe good news is this.- In a year of tracking, the VS1824 never dropped a track, failed to back up and recover, burned out a CDR drive, or blew out a button or fader. Actually, it proved itself to be a pretty good piece of hardware. However, their foolish decision to use a totally proprietary software system for backup, guarantees that their standalone will soon be replaced by a Digi 002 and a dedicated Mac! I am never going to go through this bullshit again. I'll probably hang on to the Roland as a remote recorder, though, unless somebody offers me the right price for it.-Richie

Once Pro Tools is up and running, probably about a grand. But I suspect that won't be until some time in the spring.-Richie

I don't know about Pro Tools, but with Cakewalk I sync everything with midi.

Yeah...MIDI....

Cant you slave the VS to a MIDI device????

Or can't you record a tempo map initially and then use that to sync???

I've been dumping tracks the same way you have from my VS880 to CEP2.0.
It is a pain so I'm trying to overcome my MIDI-phobia and learn how to sync it up.

You set up the VS as slave...the VS manual explains the VS settings. I use Cakewalk and the Cakewalk manual explains the computer settings. I had to mess with it a bit at first, and write all the settings down for the next time, but it works really well. It is time consuming because you’re copying in real time, but you can go do something else during each run. Just write all the settings down once you get it right, then it’s easy when you have to do it again.

I would have picked up the R-bus card and moved over more tracks than 2 at a time. I think it can move 8.

I find it hard to believe you couldn't sync them with midi or SMPTE. Even worst case you could have just striped one track with an audible smpte signal and had the computer chase to that.

Well, I confess there might be a better way to do it, but the top denizens of VS Planet and Roland tech support both suggested the same technique. Well, at least it did work, and I got a real good intro to Pro Tools in the process, as well as a glorious opportunity to really listen to some of the overdub tracks, isolated, in real time. For good or ill, it's done._Richie
