Don't you think TASCAM DP-01 is now a better option than Fostex MR8 ?

Since everyone upgrades its 128 Mb card, which adds additional cost, and supposing you have not bought the Fostex MR8, would you consider buying the Tascam DP-01 digital recorder instead ( $400 ) ?

It has a 40GB internal hard disk, 8 mono ( independent) tracks, an additional ( stereo ) Master track.

Actually, it does look pretty enticing, except that the $400 model doesn't have any XLR inputs...
Looks like you need to fork over $500 for XLR and phantom power... Which is getting pretty close to what I can get a useable 16 track deck for...

I've been thinking about it, but it is unfortunate that it doesn't come with xlr inputs.

How would you connect an XLR mic to the Tascam recorder anyway? is it possible?

You would need to utilize an XLR adapter

Interesting.

The only other limitation that is making me question it is the 2.0 usb port on the back. I only have a standard usb port. Otherwise, i'd probably purchase the tascam over the MR8.
 
I'm pretty sure that your concern about USB is a non-issue...
