Don't trust playback VU meters.

The playback VU meters do not reliably show you peaks. It seems to me like they simply sample at some constant rate, so the peaks you see are dependent upon where you start playback.

I'm going to look for an alternative peak meter...if I can't find one I'm going to look for alternative software.

Yep, I had figured that out the hard way

But I figured that was my soundblaster live screwing something up.

At first I thought that the playback meters were 1 or 2 DB to low, then too high.
I had some distorted mixes that resulted from the playback meters, and also the 'clip' indicator on the mixing window.


I've been tracking in Cool Edit, then mixing in N-Tracks, then 'mastering' again in Cool Edit. It is a pain in the buttocks, to say the least.

So I wrote this, AND THEN I noticed the thread on a very similar topic!
 
I agree. And I don't think the recording VU meters are very precise either!
 
Glad I'm not the only one. I'm looking for alternatives now...
