The Yamaha C 300 Pro Series Cassette deck is OLD STUFF and Yamaha does not support it any more and finding parts for it is slim and zero, few exceptions.
Well, I thought I was gonna have to throw this one away too today.
The little "tire" hub wheel swing mounted motor drive rubber belt which is mounted on a small plastic drive wheel assembly dry rotted over years and finally today, broke and fell off. It was making "birdie chirps" before and the transport was sluggish on REW and FF. It would often not CUE FF or CUE REW at all. Finally, it went altogether and wasn't moving tape, period.
I pulled it apart thinking "What the hell, it's junk now anyway, right ?"
I found the problem in pretty short time.
Ok, now what to do. Where am I gonna get this PART ??
I looked across my street katty corner to the strip mall over yonder and there was an ACE HARDWARE STORE. A light went on in my feeble dopey head.
AAAHHHHH SOOOO !!! (i'm not even Chinese ! ) So I went over with broken belt drive thing in hand and went to the O RING boxes thereof in the PLUMBING AISLE. Aisle # 5 in this store to be exact. I matched up an approx sized O RING as compared to my broken hub assembly drive belt and installed it. I hooked up the buttons and all the mulex plugs accordingly after re-mounting and securing the transport assembly to the frame of the case once again. I didn't put the covers on yet so I could test it open.
I plugged in the power, switched it on, popped in a cassette with some music on it, and hit PLAY. Boom! It worked. Ok let's test REW and FF and the CUES too. PRESTO, all those worked too. So, there ya go. Don't toss that machine away if that's all it is. If your transport isn't going, that's probably the reason. That little TIRE like wheel between the two hub drive gears which the little Sankyo motor operates. This one motor is bi directional and multi speed. It performs all the functions in terms of propelling the transport tape drive mechanics. REW, FF, the Cues in both directions, as well as play, pause, and your record. The other motor mounted off the side only raises and lowers the head assembly accordingly to which button you press.
It's a bit of tight work and some annoying wires to disattach from plugs on boards. But most of these mulex plugs are size keyed which means you can figure out which goes where. Also, these smart engineers at YAMAHA also thought to make the wires themselves a certain length corresponding to about where they'd plug in. So use the intuitive powers of LOGIC in this case when putting it back together again. No humpty dumpty here !
And that's a tip for today. Those old cassette decks DO warm up sound quite a bit if you mix to them. These C 300s have XLR Lo Z connections in and out, plus they have all sorts of noise reduction built in as well as a bias test for tape. Still a useful format. Some INDIE radio stations will still play cassettes. I use this machine in addition to my TASCAM DA40 DAT, and my Otari MX50 N II half track reel deck to mix to. I also have a stand alone TASCAM CD BURNER which automatically converts the Analog to Digital necessary to burn 44.1K 16 bit CDs . If you run tape first, you'll keep most of your "warmth" .... and loudness.
