so you want to record into your computer im guessing...

well i would start with plugging the usb interface into the computer, and maybe use the tape out of the mixer into the the interface, im guessing it is RCA's.

im not sure about your software, im not familiar with it. it may allow you to select your input device(s).

Hook up the guitar into the amp. Put your mic's in front of the amp, go ahead and use them both, it won't hurt. do a search about mic placement for amps etc.

Let me clarify

I'm trying to expand my studio or go bigger and I want to know what I should start with

I want to add more and I don't know what

your still a little on the vague side..

what are you doing in your studio? are you already set up for recording into your computer?

expanding= improving, usually.

a) you can never have enough mics, and you definitly have room for improvement based on your current setup. try an sm57 or two, or if your looking to go broke, a couple Senn. MD421's, especially for your guitar.

b) what kind of marshall combo amp do you have? is it the lower end solid state? maybe a tube amp?

c) a recording can only be as good as its source. if you guitar doesnt sound good, it wont sound any better recorded.

d)better cables are always good.

e)build some bass traps.

f)your computer could do for an upgrade/replacement.

g)i still dont know about that software.. maybe look into something like cubase, sonar etc, if you are sticking with the PC route.

how much money are you looking to spend?

My Band

I'm trying to get a recording of my band and studios are too expensive. What I have right now won't do it for me. I'm trying to record; a bass guitar, electric and acoustic guitar, lead and backing volcals, and a drum set, w/ each on their own track since I'm using my computer. I want to do this in medium sized bedroom and about a $3000 budget.

I thought by improving/changing the following would do it:

Mixer - Alto S-6
Sound Card - Yamaha PCI Audio (DS1 x Native)
Monitors - 140 watt 5.1 Logitech (Basicly cheap computer speakers)
Mics - 62 Shure vocal mic and a cheap no name one, just want to add more mics

so if you could let me know what to improve/change and if you have any tips

thanks, now you can get some answers!

ok, drum mics. look at packages if you want, CAD, shure makes a pack, Audix. etc. you really only need 4 mics; kick snare and 2oh's. say $350 ish

you need an interface. i suggest m-audio 18/14, maybe with pro tools m-powered. that gives you PLENTY of i/o. about $650 w/pro tools
as you still need pre-amps, i suggest utilzing ADAT, and getting a Behringer ADA8000-one of the best units behri makes. $230

definitly an sm57 for electric guitar/mic the amp. $90
nice LDC for vocals, check out some MXL stuff for this, est $200.

Acoustic guitar- use the LDC, and maybe one of the drum overheads, if its a SDC. mic it up, dont worry about too many mics!

bass guitar- use your kick drum mic and an sm57 on the amp.

backin vox, use the LDC or even just the 57.

we're under $1500 i think. get mic stands and good cables. make your own if you can.

oh i forgot, you need a better computer... build it yourself if you have that ability, or buy something with firewire for the new soundcard, plenty of ram (1gb or better), and add a second 7200(or better) hard drive just for audio. go with a p4 or amd 64 type, no celerons or anything crappy for the processor.

so theres the $3000, and you're on your way.

i look at it liek this; if you go to a studio, you pay and get your cd. if you do it yourself, you pay, get your cd and get to keep the equiptment for when you do it again.

good luck.

oh and btw if you have some extra money leftover, get some decent monitors... do a search!!
