..... i dont understand why people on home recording websites, like this one, act like they are holding the key to the answer on what the meaning of life is, when asked a question about how to do something. most of the time, there is no answer or reply what-so-ever, and rarely when there is a reply its usually "look it up". i understand this being valid for people who just pirated a program, and jumping on here right away, but there are alot of people who just dont generaly understand certain things within recording.

my advice....

just figure it out for yourself, you'll get it eventually.

to the few people who arent stuck up on some recording high horse, and actually care- your advice is greatly appreciated.

I've found this place pretty helpful over the years and have tried to help out whenever I may know something. I see the posts you've made, and while two of them have no replies, you did get response to one of them.

If you're coming in here with this attitude you have, don't expect much help.

Neither my first album, nor my studio, would exist without the tireless and thankless support of the posters on this board, and a couple of others. Sorry- if you ask a question that has no answer, you won't get an answer. Figuring it out yourself is just fine, but asking people who have already figured it out is a hell of a lot faster. Doing a search to see if the question has already been answered is faster than that. So who poured antifreeze on your Wheaties?-Richie

I hear ya.
I have only been hanging around hear since the end of last year but I have learned a ton. Applying the knowledge is a whole different thing. ;)

I don't have as much experience as most of the guys here but I do try to help out when I can. If it's a question about old Yamaha 4 tracks, basses, or the HR-16 drum machine, i'm your man. :D
I'm starting to get pretty good with Cubase too.

I agree with one of your points. When told to read the manual, the assumption is made that you are lazy or using pirated software. But the reality is some manuals are so poorly written that they border on incomprehensible. That being said, the manual is your first stop. If you still have questions, then ask for help. I have found this forum to be of great help to me. Sometimes another persons interpretation of the manual is all thats needed and sometimes the answer can only come from someone that has been though it. Sometimes there are questions that nobody has a ready answer for.
My point is that this and other forums are a tool not a be all to end all. Use it as such and you will not be upset if you get no responses.
Hang in there. ;)

Yo Moondog- You forgot to mention that some manuals leave out critical details or even lie outright. 6 months after I solved an annoying problem with my Roland VS1824CD the hard way, I found, buried in the bottom of a pile of paperwork, the addendum that explained they left it out of the manual in the first place (urge to kill).-Richie

Agreed! You ought to read the Groove Agent SE manual (I mean paragraph). Try recording GA se with that manual and you will definitely have the urge to kill.

He gets help who asks nicely, and bothers to even look in the Help files before posting and does a search when its the 2.850th "what soundcard to buy" or "track 1 bleeds on track 2"-type question, or someone who want a "Total guide to MIDI and audio recording" that would take 200 pages to answer instead of buying a recording primer.

Most folk on these boards are more than happy to pass knowledge around, but you've got to take some responsibility to learn some basics yourself and get some basic books. In many cases, this >is< rocket science....

Another problem is that some kids populate the boards with obvious "baiting" questions trying to troll up arguments or waste our time.

But be nice, don't have an attitude and don't expect an immedate answer at 3am and you'll usually get a civilized reply....

Well said!

I already gave an opinion on this, do a search

To be serious, I often say "try a search on latency" or whatever but I don't see what's wrong with that. (I'm always polite about it).

If several people have already written the answer several times (and probably more articulately than myself) why the need to write it all out again?

The fact is there's a lot of really good info that's already been written on here so I don't see the problem in letting people know that and making them aware of the search facility. I understand that someone with no experience of message boards might not realise there is a search function hence the need to be polite when pointing it out.

As someone who recieves a lot more advice than I give here, I would say that your statement below is just plain wrong and based on very limited experience of using this forum.

Stick with it, there're a lot of very helpful people here.

Very few people here act as if they have the answer to the meaning of life. If anything, people like you are getting frustrated because you think we should have the meaning of life.

I would venture to say that a third of the questions on this board can be answered with "I don't know, why don't you try experimenting with the different options you are questioning and see what works for you". Many of the other questions can be answered with, as has already been said, doing a search. Maybe other forums don't have as much information, but there have been more topics discussed on this board than you would even like to know, and the search engine provides unbelievable results.

Troubleshooting in home recording can involve a HELL of a lot of research, and this site can be your only clue as to what you are trying to achieve. But the bottom line is, unless your problem is extremely common, you'll have to do the work. We won't do it for you.

Actually in a way,I know how you feel!Lot's of times in the cave I'll spend time thinking up a provocative wise ass response trying to incite anger from people and get no response at all. This hurts me!It's almost like they have me on their ignore list

Maybe the original poster should take his own advice? "Don't even bother asking questions on recording websites..."

Hey Suedehead, I'm usually very adverse to comic-book-guy types whose (often spoofed) high level of knowledge allows them to think they're wasting their time talking to the uneducated. However I've found this board pretty useful, being an almost beginner myself. Though you're always gonna get the snooty retorts like "what do you expect when.." from a few, there are some genuinely helpful people contributing to this board.

I think it's just important that when asking a question, it's done in the right forum and asked in the right way - explaining the situation properly. As far as I can see it, the questions that don't get decent replies are those that are to do with something not working due to how projects, connections etc are set up and it is kind of difficult for someone reading the question to answer without being given the full picture.

Just talking from personal experience.

i agree with what he said, ppl on here can be stuck up losers that assume too much, as if theyre better than us, and if u r, shouldnt we hear ur stuff sometime? all the ppl on here arent famous, never heard of them or anything yet they act like they know everything....obviously thats why there still at home on the internet praying for talent right?...by the will of god u will get it, only then though when god decides to give it to you, but being stuck up with the knowledge you have is no way to attain anything. in the past year ive produced many bhangra hits (for those of u who dont know bhangra is an indian dance type music). My album is coming out this summer (please support me! =), and i work for a up and coming record label (hopefully lol, nothings promised), how many of us on here accomplished that much?, even that, its so little...and i didnt do it by , "reading the manual" as some of u love to put it, its by talent and dedication and hard work, any beginner out there that needs help, i give advice for free, musical advice also, not just technological, and my advice is better than "pirated software doesnt come with a manual". many of us cant even afford these programs, so go ahead and download them illegaly, its ok, its just music...all my revenue i plan to make is going to charity, for those who make these programs, there rich bastards lol, but what about the little kid whos busting with talent but has no money?, anyways i better go....prayer time
asalamualaikum...peace and blessings to you all

:D

I have not recorded a hit, but I have recorded a piano rock CD that a lot of people tell me is one of their favorites, and one of the reasons I was able to do this was from learning from people who know more than me. Sure, there's a lot of non-experts here, I'm one of them, but everybody knows something, so if we combine the collective knowledge together, add in a few experts like what's-his-face who wrote that huge mic thread, and use that knowledge in our own experiments and trials, then you can benefit a lot more than trying random shit out by yourself. I don't know who exactly has mentioned praying for talent, but the people here are looking for help increasing their talent, not praying for it.

if you don't like the people here or if you don't find it a useful forum then why hang around and whinge about it?

If you can't cope with the odd prick then life must be really tough.
