Im looking around at getting a new guitar. Unfortunaely im left handed so options are slightly limited and I've only got $2000 australian ($1000 US) to spend. At the moment ive narrowed it down to a second hand tele or a Dearmond starfire special. Here's the link to the tele

Does it seem like a fair price? Unformtunately i wont be able to play it before buying it. Does this sound like too much of a risk?

Ash,

My father knew that when he started to play as a kid that there would always be a lack of left handed guitars available. He learned how to play right handed, and after many years around music myself, it soon made sense why. Though the Tele looks nice, I would be hesitant to recommend plunking down almost the whole lot without being able to play it. Especially for a Japanese one. You can get a brand new american Strat in left handed for about the same price:

or a brand new American tele for less:

In your price range of 1000.00 US is very reasonable to be able to get a great left handed guitar. I would recommend looking around a bit before you commit. Good Luck,

Yeah i wish i was right handed or learnt right handed but it seemed very unnatural and id probably still be having problems. I remember a friend who had a guitar way before i learnt and i couldnt even hold the damn thing right. Thought i was just realy bad at it. Ofcourse i later realised that this was because it was a right handed guitar. Thanks for the links but i'm not going to buy a guitar from overseas, too much hassle. Interstate is bad enough for me. I get the feeling that left handed tele's are more expensive over hear but i would love to hear of any places in Australia that have new tele's in my price range.

I've already tried Ebay but there was nothing there. I think the link you gave me was for Ebay in America which, as i stated is of no help to me.

CA,

What exactly are you looking for in a guitar................I mean why specifically those choices?

Have you spoken to Dehringers in Adelaide, surely they could beat that price. Alternatively, tell me what your requirements are and I'll fish around for you.

Thanks fanger, i'll admit i missed that when i did my last seach or ebay. Not exactly what im looking for but atleast it shows that ebay could be usefull.

Well im looking for something in the $2000 range obviously. I already have a Maton mastersounds sparkel top which is realy nice for distorted power chords ie rock songs and lead. But i play rythem and i'm looking for something that sounds nice with a light distortion, clean guitar and something thats good for rythm. My friend (whos been playing for about 8 years) used to own a Ricky 325 (not quite me league) and suggests a hollow body is a must. Also ive heard that tele's are nice for this (YOu AM I are a major influnece) and they are a good rythem guitar. I'm open to other suggestions (just not a Strat, sorry personal bias that wont be changed no mater how wrong i am)
I plan from getting it from derringers. Can usualy knock of a bit of the price and they ALWAYS match their compeditors. Im a Derringers man all the way :D
Thanks for the help, keep it coming.

Can anyone suggest a better guitar for me or am i already on track?

Ash,

Funny that I was always something of an anti Fender person, that is until about 5 years ago when I sold my Rick 330 and bought a Tele Plus...........then traded with my son.......my SG for a 40th Anniversary Strat he was buying.

Thing is, you have to decide whether you will need the "warm, stronger" sound of humbuckers (Gibson), or the "lighter, transparent" sound of single coils (Fender).

An alternative is to search out something like a second hand Patrick Eggle "Berlin Pro"...........they have humbuckers, but are switchable to single coil...........in all there are 9 selections available from 2 pickups.........have a look at the recent thread here ...."Nice Guitar". Finding a left handed one could be a problem though.

Unfortunately, no one else can make this decision for you.

Hand made

Well now im thinking of getting one built for me. Probably hollow body, set neck, splitalbe humbucker bridge, single coil middle and humbucker neck, gibson style head, dont know about the body yet. A few thingks i might need some help with though
What material should i be looking at getting for the body and neck?
What width, thickness and fredboard radius would i need considering a wont be playing lead?

Contact.....http://www.fretco.com.au/..........they are Adelaide based, with a good luthier. I presume he is still there, so have a talk to him about your needs.

What I like in an instrument is likely to be different to what you want, so I wont offer any advice re neck dimensions, etc.
