You know, when one of your completely talent less friends is listening to the radio with you and say, "You should write a song like this ! "

ARRRRRRRG !

Not any more than hearing your friend say "That ought to be on the radio" when you play one of your tunes.

No.

The vast majority of folks out there know diddly squirt and care even less about how a song is written. In fact a great percentage of people don't know what the heck the lyrics say in most songs they listen to.

So it comes down to this..

Perhaps your friend is correct if your goal is to write a commercially viable song (hit).

If you don't care about writing commercially viable tunes, then it doesn't matter what your friend thinks (or anyone else for that matter).

My .02 :)

Yup... that and "Man.. this songs great... you should really do something with it".. and I sit there and ask them "Like What?", and they say.. "You know, take it to the next step", and I say "what's the next step and how do I go about doing it?", and they say "You know.. get it on the radio", and I say "OK... how?", and they say "I don't know... but you really should do something with the song anyway".

:D ;)

I have no friends.
When I had one or two in the past they were asking stupid questions all the time.

No I don't worry about what my friends say.

Yeah, you get stuff like "you should send that in"...... just who the hell should I send it to? Did you have someone in mind?

At least it's some kind of compliment if your friend(s) say something like that.
My (so-called) friends allways have comments on my stuff, like :"why don't you do it this way" or "try it without that" and so on. And they don't even make music themselves.
Not that i get angry or anything..........IT JUST HURTS SO MUCH INSIDE......BOOHOOOO....(just waisting some tears here)
Hmmmmm there might be a song in this...........

What I hate more than any of that is when I share a song I'm working on with someone, and while they are "listening" to it, they are also talking to someone, reading a book, baking a cake, and surfing the net. Then when it's over they say, in a distracted tone of voice: "that was neat".
But the next day if you strum "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", they are ecstatic! "Dude... that is awesome! You are so cool!"

It's discouraging for songwriters that most people aren't really interested in songs they don't already know (unless their favorite rock star is singing it).

Blammo...ding ding ding!

And i hate it too lol. There was a time where lsiteners straved for original!

Most of the "original" that's out there is some reqritten rendition of old punk songs or (oxymoron here) mainstream alternative.

Hence why I built a studio. I have two fans! One on the ceiling and one that oscillates. :D

So true. I have this argument with my own wife. She encourages me to do more covers: "people really like it when you play songs that they know." To which I say, "well then let them go home and turn on the radio" or, "after they hear my songs a couple times, then they will know them".

Well, there are rewards for playing original music. You might have a small audience, and there might be a loud noise coming from the cappucino maker, but at least you don't get paid much.

Q:What's the difference between a songwriter and a large pizza?

A: The pizza can feed a family of four.

that wouldnt bother me.....i think if one is bothered by that they have underlying issues, maybe in the area that they have feelings of inadequecy in their songwriting.....

consider this....lets say you write a song and play it for 100 people and ask for truthful feedback....some will say it suck.....alot will say its a so-so song......some may like it a little......one person just thinks its the greatest song ever written......on some level, i think thats a success.......if that one person is a publisher/producer then its REALLY a success :D

at some point you have to learn to take criticism and get to the point where ALL feedback is useful to you.....like Jagular said, if your goal is getting something on the radio, you may wanna listen alot more to what that friend says.......

one doesnt have to know didly squat about songwriting to listen to a song and know if its good or not......thank every person along the way that offers you advice and criticism because they are good lessons......

Oscar Wild?

There's only one thing worse than playing your new song to a friend and have them say "Wow, that's excellent you should do something with it".

That's when they DON'T say "Wow, that's excellent you should do something with it" !!!
