Does Reaper clean up after itself?

How does reaper clean up it's temporary project files? Until minutes ago, I had it configured to save all project files in a folder called reaper/temp, giving me the impression that all the contents of that folder were temporary.

I noticed that my "temp" folder had hit a size of 50 GB, so I decided to see about cleaning it up a little. I listened to several of the files in there and found that they were mostly malformed half takes that I had thought Reaper should have deleted months ago. So I deleted everything in the folder.

Then I opened a project and discovered that most of the data was missing. Fortunately, I transfer things back and forth between reaper and Audacity frequently, so I had most of the really important information in .wav files elsewhere.

The question is, Does Reaper delete files that aren't needed anymore? If I record a take and decide I don't like it, will I have to go into the project's storage and manually delete it?

Yeah, it errs on the side of caution. When you are pretty sure you have a song the way you want, you can Save As then "copy and trim media" to a new folder, which will have all the stuff you newed, then go ahead and delete the old one.

Thank you.

If I select those options when I save the first time, will it automatically delete all the unused data?

ahh good link!

You will notice that almost everyone in the universe, including PigPen from Peanuts is far far far more organized than I am, that link shows a VERY smart way to go about it.

It's not the Reaper forum, but Funky keeps us all in line!

I create a new folder each time I start a project. I name the folder with the song name to make it easy for me. So the only files in the folder are directly related to the project, and there is nothing in the folder except that song. All the .wav files and reaper project files are there. If I decide to wipe out everything except the original .wav files and stems, I go into the folder, right-click and arrange icons by type, highlight all the reaper files and delete. Then they will go automatically to the recycle bin. If I decide later on that I didn't want to wipe the whole project, I simply go into the recycle bin and restore.

You can also go to File>Clean current project directory
