does my cd recorder suck

ok, i recently bought a Sony RCD-W50C - a stand alone cd recorder because i felt like i always had all kinds of problems with burning software. well, i'm able to record all kinds of poo just fine, but it seems that people have a hard time playing the cds that i give them.

HOWEVER, they happen to play just fine on car cd players and on computer players - but, not regular consumer, home stereo systems. WHY is this? it's making me crazy!

my little, tiny theory is that my Sony is using "newer" technology and therefore it plays ok on similarly "newer" technology sytems - like cars or computers, but not on the "older" tech. of home systems.

but, this is not a well founded theory.

does it have anything to do with the brand of cd i'm buying (also unlikely) - first maxell and now fuji (which is an "all purpose" - but it was also a problem with the maxells).

so does Sony suck or what gives?

outlaw: i'd be happy to. i didn't know i was buying budgets - i'm a for real clueless newbie. what is a good company to go with?

Fuji, Sony, TDK, etc.... None of that stuff that is Free after the mail-in rebates.

could you offer a couple company names, though, of who to buy from - so i don't make the same mistake again.

1x? are you saying don't do high speed? this is a stand alone - a cd player with an additional recorder. it only has two speeds - normal & high. i only record in normal.

I have the Fujifilm 50 CD spinal with the 5 different colors that I got at Fry's Electronics for about $15 (sale?) if I remember correctly. They work fine for me.

For important stuff I burn on some (got the box right here:D) Sony 10CRM80L

I am going to go out on a limb here and guess that stands for 10 count recordable media/minute 80 lenth. Just based on its a 10 pack of CD-Rs and they hold 80 minutes. I forgot how much they were. $8 maybe :confused:

Another thing to look for is 74 minute CDs. I can't find them at any retail stores anymore. Guitar Center might have them, but I haven't really looked. 74 minute CDs should be more reliable because the information is not being sqeezed.

This is a problem I have had more than my share of. It seems to have stopped since I threw out 200 of those stupid Prime Peripherals I got at Office Max.

Its not a good feeling, I know.
 
I just bought a Plextor Premium external cdrw and i have to say it is exellent. Its what the Pro's use but its not cheap.
 
Most budget ,consumer c/d recorders require audio- only c/d's that burn at the lowest speed possible. In addition, consumer recorders, mostly limited to burning speeds of 1 or 2x, introduces a hi-level of BLER's (block error rates) along with below-avg A/D-D/A converters rendering them incapable of burning Red or even Orange-book standard c/d's (which your average home/car/walkman stereo easily recognizes). Again, the key is to use cdr's that operate at the lowest speed possible!
I encountered this same prob using a Philips 765 which originally req'd HDR discs; then purchased an Onkyo 513 which operated at speeds of 1-4x yet still had BLER probs.
I finally bought a TASCAM CDRW700 which burns Red & Orange w. 24 bit converters which I use for my wack-@ss mixdowns!
The wif-ee bought a Plex 1 1/2 ago of which the few times I used for burning, has always produced a universal c/d rather than a glass coaster!
