Does it matter what firewire card i get for my DAW?

It very well might. Check your manual/manufacture website. Generally speaking, NEC chipsets have problems with audio devices. Most firewire interfaces I have worked with recommend a TI chipset. I would go Adaptec since it seems everyone supports those

Get yourself a TI chipset firewire card. Everything should be fine then...

Almost every firewire soundcard manufacturer posts what works with their equipment. Have you even looked at their website?

For example, MOTU insists that you use a TexasInstruments or Lucent firewire chipset. It's right on their website. So when I knew I wanted an 828mkII, I made sure that I bought a laptop with a TI firewire chipset.

(The engineers who build 'em know what works...)

I'd say it matters a lot. I have a laptop so PCI cards aren't an option for me but I've had to go through 5 different PCMCIA Firewire cards to find one that my HP liked. Hopefully whoever makes your computer has better support than HP :(

I had great luck with my Keyspan firewire card. TI chipset seems to universally work with audio interfaces. It set my back a whole $35 (which is a little pricey when you're looking at $5.00 cards), but I plugged it in and it just worked and worked and worked. :D
