does it matter depending on equipment?

i know this has been asked many times before, but ....

im getting alot of noise from mixer via rack mods. does it depend on eq. which audio cables you use. i have XLR to 1/4" trs. from BEHRINGER TRUTH 2031A's into ALESIS MULTIMIX FX 6 mixer, via cntrlrm.

RACKS: MOTIF, JV880, MOPHATT, PROTEUS 2000. (midi thru) via TS 8ch. snake into mixer. the PROTEUS makes the most noise. does each one of the racks need a different (balanced/unbalanced)(ts/trs) cable?

The whole Proteus family are noisy. If you like it enough to put up with the noise, keep it. If not, punt it.

You don't say which brand of snake you are using. If it's a Hosa you will do yourself a big favor by investing in at least another step up in quality. Pro studios use snakes quite sucessfully, so if I understood your question no, you don't need to go to individual cables for each synth.

im using HOSA 8 channel (TS) i think. i made sure no audio and power cables were touching.

the alesis multimix 6, requires balanced right? so should i use (TRS) for other synths, and (TS) for proteus?

or should i place E-MU synths in ch. 1 & 2. which are mono? and MOTIF/JV880 in ch. 3/4 & 5/6, which are stereo?

Get a better quality TRS ('tip ring sleeve') snake. The TRS configuration is simply a 1/4" plug version of a balanced 'cannon' connector with hot, cold and ground.

You can use a balanced snake for unbalanced synths --- it will just act like a tip/sleeve connection on the synth end. If the manual for your Multimix says it has balanced inputs, then it does - I'm not your source on that.

As far as the rest of your question, just adjust your ins and outs until you get something that makes the least noise.

Worst case scenerio, you'll have too put a noise gate across the noisey outputs, or even across the Alesis main outputs (Best to eliminate these problems at the channel level though).
