does anyone over 30 like dance music?

maybe this is the wrong forum to post this, but...

everytime i play any music that is obviously chopped up, digitally enhanced, spliced, or likewise electronically fried, (or even just hip-hop) for someone over 30-35 (older friends, uncles, co-workers, etc) they always tune it out or suggest we put something else on.

is this the new "never trust anyone over 30?"

this is weird because i never enjoy talking music with 20-somethings who listen to electronic music, i always get better conversations with rockers & people who like "songs" as opposed to "beats/grooves," but damn, i love the music. i love when people fuck with things electronically. but as soon as i mention or play any contemporary electronic bands/artists, the eyes always glaze over and the subject is usually changed.

do old people just not "get it?"

I actually like several types of music. Hard rock and Heavy Metal are my favorites though.

However, even when I was younger .... sheeesh ...... I never cared for Hip Hop, Rap or Electronica.
To me, that shit just sucks but that's just this old farts opinion.

I'm the same way. I was into heavy metal and classic rock as a teen. When rap started to make the scene and become popular, I didn't like it, and the same with hiphop. I'm a bit more tolerant now that I am almost 40, but it's not that I dislike electronic music, I just don't have a taste for it.
And some hiphop to me is cool, and lyrically amazing. Some of it is just sampled crap. But then again, so is some organic music....

i guess that's part of it that confuses me... the automatic assumption that sampling music makes it crap. sure, a lot of it is just stupid 8-bar loops of songs that were already hits, but a lot of sampling is innovative and interesting...

i guess the main point is, i'm seeing a kind of basic physical aversion some older people have to digitally altered sounds. take my uncle Mike, for example... he's always been into great music his whole life and has turned me onto some awesome stuff. I play him some Manu Chao, who is this singer/songwriter who sings cool little songs in Portugese, Spanish, & French, who relies heavily on "found sounds" & chopped up loops & uses a lot of filters, but there's always a SONG written first. My uncle's diggin' it, until we get to a part that uses a lot of the found sounds & goofy plugin effects (but not in poor taste, it fits the song), and he just kind of gets this "I'm hearing alien signals from the future" kind of look on his face. even though in my opinion, the digitized stuff helped the song be all it could be, it didn't sit with him. same with a lot of other people i've played that kind of stuff for. if an envelope's chopped off to quick, or something loops in a cool-sounding but totally un-natural way, that's it.

i dunno. i'm not trying to say you guys are old & out of touch, i'm just curious why this stuff isn't crossing generational barriers. shit... is there some NEW kind of music i should be wary of the teens of today listening to? i'm 25, for god's sake... i mean, i like old people music, why don't they like young people music?

I'm 38, and it was my generation that invented modern dance music. Either your relatives are dimwits, or you live in the US, or you suck.

Dance covers loads of different styles though, its hard to put just one style in it... I know alot of people who are over 30 who like more ambient dance (Massive Attack etc). I would probably say your right about hard house, but i personally dont like this, so i think its easier for me to say that
