Hey I have recently spent a LOT of money on getting some Auralex studio foam, a new Fatar Studio Logic full sized piano midi keyboard controller, a pair of Mackie near fields and a King's Ransom worth of other stuff for my studio. I was wondering if anyone had any photos of or plans/drawings of studio furniture that they built themselves of desks for their computer, midi controller, mixer, near field monitors.

The desk has to be at least 5 feet wide for the keyboard. I don't know how tall to build the desk because I do not know how tall a normal piano is. I am very interested in gettin gbetter at playing real piano, so I want it to be EXACTLY the same distance from the top of the keys to the floor as a notmal piano.

I have Mackie HR624s that I want mounted head level. I have built book cases before. And I have made complete tables before. So I am no newbie to the router and drill. But I cannot afford to spend the $$$ on buying solid wood for this project. I am more interested in some particle board job that I can cover in some kind of laminate/fermika/whatever. I want it to look nice. Black if possible. But color doesn't really matter. I am mostly worried about building someting that can support this Fatar midi keyboard controll which weighs A FUCKING LOT! without wobbling or collapsing. Any advice would be apprecited.

Cheers!

Hey Fishmed - Aren't those JBL 4311's coming from the ceiling? I've got a set (since 1979) that I need to have the woofers reconed. Also have to replace a blown tweeter. I've always loved the sound of them.

DD,

They are JBL 4311 monitors. My woofers need to be reconed too.

Here's a couple of shots of my homemade furniture (not fancy but functional). The pix are outdated, but give a flavor of the construction. I've since upgraded to a Mackie 32x8 console which fills the entire width of the desk, and have replaced the ADATs with a Mackie MDR HD recorder.

The desk is 3/4" plywood on top of a frame made from 2x3's. I used framing angles from Lowes to tie the 2x3's together. With the support added by the 2 side units it is rock solid.

The equipment rack is a modified printer stand. The internal rack has heavy duty rails to allow it to track out for access to wiring.

Cheers,
Darryl.....(another double D)

Jumpingflash...

Are you really from Venice Italy?

Doi you know Marta Masa?

Just a stab in the dark.

when I got my M-Audio BX8 monitors, I built speakers stands of oak wood, spray-painted them in drak blue and put the monitors on MoPads on the stands. They look great and the insulation of the speakers couldn't be better. Saved me a buck or two as well. I love doing these sort of things and can't wait to get my own house and build a recording studio.

Fishmed,
How large is your control and your live room?

My Control room is about 9' X 15'
and my live room is about 6' X 8'

I usually cut the Drums, bass (direct), and keyboards first with scratch vocals and direct guitars. I then go back and over-dub the vocals and guitars. I would like to get an isolation guitar cab someday. It is not a big place, but it works.

My goal was to build a studio without having to tear down major walls.
