Does anyone make a plain A/D converter anymore?

I have been looking for a stripped down A/D converter with S/PDIF, but it is not as easy to find as I thought it would be.

I just need two channels of 1/4" line level in, converted to S/PDIF (RCA). Like a simple DAC only, in reverse. So I can have a straightforward way of getting the 2-mix from my analog desk back to the DAW.

I don't need mic pres, USB, Firewire, meters, knobs, and lights all over it. Just an A/D converter at a reasonable price.

If anyone happens to know of a small one, please send me a line.

Thanks, man.

maybe a used rme or a used apogee minime? both stripped down and a little bit expensive (roughly $400-500 used; maybe a little more or less) but very high quality.

Plenty of AD convertors out there, but 2 channel units tend to be expensive since theyre often geared toward scientific archiving quality and such. Cheaper units just have it built into the card instead of using external units.

So you're stuck with either getting something like a Benchmark and hooking it up to your existing whatever, or getting something like a RME9632, Lynx L22, or whatever that has good convertors built in.

Erm, maybe an M-Audio Delta something or other?

I hesitate to mention the name of the Beast but there's always the Behringer Ultramatch SRC2496. The AD is not at all bad, especially for the price.

Well it depends on what you mean by reasonable. Delta 44/66 though PCI.
Lucid has standalone ad or da. Maudio used to have the cow? cheapies. Not sure if they are discontinued or not.

Lucid
Benchmark
Lavry
Apogee.
Lynx
etc
etc
etc

All have 2 channel A/D. The high-end stuff typically is dedicated.

FWIW, all my A/D are standalone dedicated convertors.

Art DI/O. Actually pretty good for the price. They do 24/96, but have been discontinued, so you'll need to find one used.

OUCH!! Those are a little pricey.

I am having trouble justifying why I should spend $1000 or more for a simple converter for my small in-home studio. I mean, sure I want good quality but, consider this.

Just a few weeks ago there was a guy on here trying to convince everyone that there is not that much difference between converters. Just to put it all into perspective, I wanted to see for myself.

I ran off and A/B'd my own RME converters with my Behringer converters on the outputs coming from the DAW. (I would consider RME to be a mid-range quality product.) While I could tell some difference at higher volumes, it was very minimal and I really had to pay close attention to even detect it. It was so close that I switched them back and forth several dozen times before I could make a decision. The RME was just "the tiniest bit" brighter in the midrange which gave me the perception of having more dynamic range. (Though, I don't think that is possible because they are both 24bit.) The snare drum seemed to have a bit more pop, but I couldn't tell much (if any) difference in the other instruments. There was even a point where I couldn't tell if I was actually hearing a difference or if it was my imagination. Yes, they were that close!

Now, if that's all the difference I am going to notice between a mid-range converter and a high-end converter, then I don't believe I would take the leap.

There are a few good ideas here though. Thanks everyone.

Or pick up Tenka's Rumour that he's selling. Sweet A/D in bypass mode, nice little reverb unit too!

Or should that have read "Sweat A.D", FV?

A Lynx One sound card would do the trick. Only 48Khz though.
I don't need another sound card. I already have a good sound card in the DAW with maybe 7,000 different kinds of digital I/O. I just need an external S/PDIF converter to feed the signal to my sound card. I am already using 26 other channels and I only have S/PDIF unused right now so, I want to use it for the 2-mix return. In fact, I think all five of my PCI slots are full. My sound card takes up four slots and I have a firewire card in there too.

DAMN!!!! It's gone.

I wish I would have seen that last week. I have been wanting one of those real bad. Not for the converters but, for the reverb. I would have bought it in a New York minute.

(I've been busy and haven't looked at the ads very much. Or I just missed it.)

DOUBLE DAMN!!! (And all those other nasty words too.)
