I am wondering what I have here. It is a Audio-Technica AT-813. I am looking for info on it. I bought it used for $30 and I am trying to find out if I can use phantom power on it or just a battery.
If any one has a link i can follow or something that would be great. I have found info on the AT-813A, Is it pretty much the same?

Thanks

I decided to just try it.

The mic burst in to flames, Just kidding. I looked at the at813 vs at813a the only difference seems to be one is Unidirestional and the other is cardoid pattern. Work with 48 volts.

Don't know the difference between 813 and 813a, but I imagine someone at AT could tell you. If I'm not mistaken this is the mic they sold as a budget U-87 soundalike, and at the price it sold for (around $150?) it wasn't a bad vocal mic. Not exactly a U-87, mind you, but indeed it sounded more expensive than it was. If it's in good shape, that's an excellent price you got.

I have no experience with this mic but I read an interview with some indy engineer (can't recall his name but I'll see if I can dig up the article) in TapeOp about a year ago and he was touting this mic as a 87 clone. I think he said if an 87 has a golden sheen, the 813 has a silver one. Sounds a little hard to swallow to me but I'd imagine it's a decent mic.

I didnt expect it to be that style of microphone, i was expecting a side address... looks more like a Beyer handheld.
Wanna sell it? I got $40 plus shipping....

Yeah!! If you want it I'm keeping it!

Thanks Tubedude, but I think I will keep it. Looks like I scored. However It had a broken wire inside at the battery connector when I bought it that I had to fix. (boy that was tough, right) Works fine now though. I do have to sing about 1 and 1/2 foot back or it will flutter in the hard parts, and nothing seems to be clipping. The 813a says it is great for close up vocals so I think perhaps they changed something in that way? mabey to them 1 & 1/2 feet is close? I'm used to stage mics that you can wear the skin off your lips with.

Harvey: The polar pattern on the mic look like it picks up more to the back than on the 813a but I guess it could be a poor illistration.? I went back and read it again thinking I might find it was actually omnidirectional and that I had miss spoke but nope, unidirectional?

Thanks very much guys for all the input. I'm going to do some tracks with it on vocals.

i love the at813. i use it for vocals in my rock band, kind of a funny shape. it isnt bad for acoustic guitar too. if you ever decide to get rid of it please contact me.

Yes Funny shape!

Would seem more natural holding it upside down:). Just joking...
Ya I had to buy a spring loaded clip for it. Funky thing it is, Spring loaded clips work good for holding lyric sheets in a pinch though.

Freudian Slip, you scored big I love that microphone. I won't use anything else for doing acoustic guitar.
