Do you sound worse than your mic?

Just a thought, sometimes mics get in the way........set it up and record! my best recordings were made with my realistic PZM. To quote a friend from Nashville: "there is a fine art of ignoring the microphone, the pros are masters of this - its like POOF, and they are suddenly on the back porch"

Actually, I can't get in a groove unless I am in front of a mic.
