Do you plug into teh compressor and compress as you record

OR

Do you make compression after youve tracked and recorded and add it after everythings recorded?

OR

Do you do a little bit of both, if you do both please tell me what you compress before/after and why?

AND

what are the benifits of recordeing before OR after?

i usually do it after..because if the vocal, guitar etc. take is perfect but u don[t like what the compressor did it to it your stuck with. mean while if u do it after u can still fiddle with it to find a better sound

Depends on the singer, but for myself, I generally lightly limit going in. Maybe 1-2 db at 10:1+ just to catch the transients. If I need it more in your face I will compress again in the mix.

No, I don't.

Well, OK, I have some compression on the vocals. I usually do that when recording, because my dbx is transparent enough so I don't have to worry about it when mixing.

Both, depending on the situation.

I compress the dogshit out of everything going in.......

at this point i have very little dynamics whatsoever so very little is needed, if any, during mixing......

I compress going in and to make it twice as sweet I compress when needed after...

I think compression used during tracking should be done when its
required to get a track without overloading, like for a vocalist with alot of dynamics, another example is if its going to effect the way you play the part( such as long sustain on a lead or evening picking notes so it sounds better as your tracking) otherwise why not do it later so you can get it just right?

Bonth.

On drums and vocals. But just a bit as I record. Mainly on drums. And if the drummer use too unwanted dynamics, often the case in whaen the drummer has a double pedal/2 kick drums, I also expand a bit as I record.

About the vocals, just the rock/heavy stuff is compressed as I record.
