do you also rout Preamp-inputs to your patchbay?

i'm recabling all i got in here, filling up my two patchbays again,
but now i wonder; do you guys also connect your Preamp inputs to your patchbay?,
i got an instrument input on my joemeek, its on the front of the unit so i leave it there,
same goes for my sansamp psa-1.... i just use the instrument input in the front,
but now i got this little symetrix sx201 with preamp-input on the back...
if i route this to my patchbay for easy-use...will i get problems with -i don't know- impedance, volume, quality loss or something?

and is this correct: most line inputs and outputs have an impedance of 600 ohm ? or is this only for cables....or for every cable and machine different?
and instrument(guitar) inputs have high-Z ?

:o blush

I have all my instrument inputs connected to my patch-bay, regardless if the input is on the back or the front.

I do this because it means less plugging and unplugging a cable into the actual units input. And I have this fear- that after plugging/unplugging too many times the input jack might break. And it's a LOT cheaper to replace a patchbay than it is to replace those processors, etc.

I do know you want your signal chain to be as short as possible, but I myself haven't heard noticable loss doing things this way. And as long as I'm happy, then rock on!

One you thing you gotta look at is how your pre-amp selects it signal. I know my old ART MPII used to bypass the XLR input once you plugged a 1/4 inch plug in the back.

yeah a lot of gear will do that. I got some maybe 6' xlrs that I hook up to my pres that have the xlr inputs in the back, then plug into those, instead of turning my rack around every time. gotta label them. dont think u need to be paranoid about the equipment's input jacks. even if they break u can get them repaired pretty cheep.

Still cheaper to replace/change the patchbay routing to open jacks or replace a patchbay than have someone else do that repair (keyword: someone else).

And it's just a lot nicer having all my inputs in one line right there, rather than reaching every-which-way...

It serves the purpose of making the important gear take less possible abuse, the ease of my mind on that issue, and the convenience of all my inputs being in that clean little line.

A lot of people don't like putting preamps on patchbays due to phantom power issues. If it is well wired and maintained, that should not be an issue though.

i'm not touching my xlr ins and outs, just 1/4" jack connectors,
and true! i remember something about "if u use this input, the other is disabled", gonna dig up my manuals today !
thanks for the info

Sorry, the original post said "preamps". That led me to believe the XLR mic preamp jacks are what you were referring to, and not the 1/4" line amps.

if you use a ssnake box for your mics to console just make some of those xlr lines dedicated to mic pres. then put the outs into your bay so you can patch em to any channel on your machine.

I read all this and i'm very confused. If you plug a preamp in a patchbay, do you need to have a patchbay with XLR ins and outs? otherwise where will you plug your mic ?

You plug it XLR out of the preamp, to whatever flavor your patchbay is. If its a solder bay, you cut the pkug off and solder the leads to the proper pins. If it's 1/4", you buy a FXLR cable to TRS.

my post is misleading,
because i got this one eq with a preamp input that is 1/4",
thats where my question started,
i don't connect XLR outs to a patchbay, i use patchbays just for line outputs, the "normal ins and outs of compressors and soundcards"

umm...

yeah. comressors, eq's, preamp outputs, channel inputs, mixers....

what else would you use a patchbay FOR anyway?!?

just wonderin'.....
